3 Background Increasing numbers of Academic Misconduct cases, of which the majority concern plagiarism No common approach to delivery of plagiarism training for students, nor guidance on core content 2006: UoY joined a consortium led by Epigeum – spin-off from Imperial – to produce a generic on-line package on plagiarism awareness Autumn 2006: pilot in CS Summer 2007: port to BlackBoard, re-order and tailor material to York Autumn 2007: pilot in 6 departments: positive response Autumn 2008: roll-out to whole University!

4 Aims and objectives of the tutorial To provide a consistent base for plagiarism awareness training across the institution –To explain the benefits of appropriate referencing –To explain how to acknowledge other people’s work –To provide quizzes and exercises to help students assess whether they have understood the concepts –To provide answers to FAQs, and links to useful resources To give due consideration to students on joint courses, those taking electives, and visiting students To give a convenient and consistent way of obtaining evidence that students have completed the tutorial To be used (mandatorily) by students found guilty of plagiarism, but who are continuing their studies To be a reference tool, available throughout a student’s programme of study

15 Implications for departments The aim of the tutorial is to complement, not replace, departmental guidance on academic misconduct –Discipline-specific advice –Other forms of misconduct: collusion, personation, fabrication, … –Need to consider whether existing guidance needs to change to fit better with VLE tutorial Support for students –Technical –Pedagogical Timing –Early (but beware overload in week 1) –Deadline for UGs is progression at end of year –Students who start late or transfer between departments mid- year

16 Implications for departments Certificates to be kept on student files Auditing methods –Could use VLE Gradebook, but … –Link with first open assessment handin? Consider: electives, joint course students, visiting students Consider: is Department’s entry in referencing table still accurate? If not, inform SCA.

17 Department-specific tailoring There is space in the tutorial where departments should add specific local instructions: –Welcome page –Certificate page: what to do with the certificate –Who to contact with queries (technical or academic support) Also –Paraphrasing examples –Referencing guidelines table
