Informatics 132 - Team 5 Initial Presentation David Schramm Rubin Singh Chad Curtis Jesse Danielson

Intro/Overview Client: Kristine Ferry, Director of Web Services for UCI Libraries Website: http://lib.uci.eduhttp://lib.uci.edu Users: new graduate students and new faculty Our purpose is to determine what users imagine to be an intuitive way to organize information associated with a set of given tasks and represent this by designing a mockup.

Key points that need to be addressed in our user study What do you imagine the process should be to obtain a library card? What do you imagine to be the best way to find out how long a book can be checked out for? What should the process be to have books delivered to ones office? How should one be able to go about having UCI request books from other libraries?

What methods are you going to employ to find answers to your HCI problem? 1) User Interviews: have users describe how they would ideally complete tasks. 2) Have users preform a similar task on the website. (with audio/video capture) 3) Create mock-up based on data from task analysis. 4) Test process mock-ups with 3 grads and 3 faculty members.

User Interview Testing Methodology 4 Tasks to Analyze o Subdivided among us, each of us interviews (approx 4) individuals (up to 30 minutes per individual). o Each interviewee only performs two or more of the tasks in depth. o Have users illustrate how they would expect to see the information presented.  Ask followup questions as needed.  Record audio, Record notes. o Individual then preforms same task on the current library website and have them talk aloud while preforming task.  Record user interaction with audio and screen capture. Create mock-ups based on all results found. Retest mock-ups on a total of 3 grad students and 3 faculty members to determine if mock-ups are valid.

Example Tasks Users May Be Presented With In A User Test "Coming to a school new to you, how would you expect to obtain a library card?" o "Where would you expect to find the card?" o "Where would you prefer to find the card?"  "Illustrate how you would do this" "How would you go about determing how long you can check out a book?" o "If you had to do this online, how would you prefer the system to work?"
