1 Water Quality & Living Environment Click on a Link Below to Begin Water Quality & Living Environment Click on a Link Below to Begin Living Environment Project This project, designed for between 3-5 group members will allow students to convey information provided throughout the lesson and show understanding of the underwater community. Lake Ontario Living Environment PowerPoint The PowerPoint slides within this lesson are designed to be an introductory guide before beginning the Lab portion of this lesson plan and are found attached to this PowerPoint. Living Environment Lab This lab is designed for students to get an hands on approach to learning about the underwater environment of Lake Ontario, as well as how pollution effects plant and animal life underwater. According to the EPA, water quality is the physical, chemical, and aesthetic condition of the water being used or consumed by a community in an environment. A healthy community is one in which the water quality is good enough to support the needs of the community. The higher the quality of the water in the community, the more plant and animal live able to live in the community.

The good quality water supply is used for many needs, including: Supply of Drinking Water Irrigation of crops for food supplies Community living for fish and marine life Science and Education Shipping and Navigation Transportation The good quality water supply is used for many needs, including: Supply of Drinking Water Irrigation of crops for food supplies Community living for fish and marine life Science and Education Shipping and Navigation Transportation

Even though water is a renewable resource in the world, we need to be sure to keep the quality of the water in the best condition. Water provides an ecosystem for marine life, and is used to irrigate crops consumed by humans, thus affecting the land life ecosystem. We use water for so many things, it’s important to keep it clean and well maintained. The quality of water is directly affected by the community using it. Using bodies of water to dispose of chemicals and unused materials often deteriorates the condition of the water, and creates a poor quality body of water. The exposure of pollution into the water system is among the prime reasons water quality is low in some regions, and often times leads to poor water quality. We do. Physically: Bacteria and Algae Physical: Temperature, Clarity, Color Chemical: PH, Dissolved Oxygen, Biological Oxygen Demand, Nutrients, Organic and Inorganic Compounds. Aesthetic: Odor, Color, Floating Matter Radioactive: Alpha, Beta, Gamma Radiation Emitters

Water Quality How does poor water quality affect the environment? Poor water quality can result in poor crops and shortages of food for different land populations. Pollution can kill of different species of plant and animal life underneath the surface of the water. The lack of plant and animal life underneath the surface of the water can also result in a shortage of food for land living animals. Developing different educational programs alerting populations to the negative affects poor water quality can have on ecosystems can help prevent pollution and poor water quality. Developing pollution reduction laws and programs to help combat corporations and individuals from polluting in the first place. Working with the community to reduce the effects of runoff.
