English 2010

Genre Knowledge Profile : Scene Setting Dialogue Paul Cardall fits perfectly into public issue of organ donation. Report Factual Information Appeal to Interests and concerns of audience Position Paper Clear and concise thesis Good Argument Connections with other arguments Proposal Specific, clear and realistic proposal Included charts and other images to aid audience’s understanding Position Paper: Connection with other arguments. “If they win they bring home a much bigger check… ‘So much in fact,’ says Hal Stern, ‘that the six big conferences don’t want to share money with the smaller conferences’.”

Rhetorical Knowledge In my presentation of the issue of the BCS system I had two strong sides to take into consideration. The first was the strength and emotion of the fans. Every sensible college football fan wants a playoff. But I took a look at the big picture and asked myself, what is it about the BCS that has made it successful thus far. Hence the reason I decided to take the side of the BCS for my position paper. I then entered in my own theories and ideas into the issue at hand with my own proposal that was stemmed off of others’ plans and layouts. Proposal: Addressing Counterarguments “Now some may ask of course, well what happens to all of the other smaller bowl games…?” “…I propose that we still bring in the companies that sponsor these smaller bowls to come and sponsor the conference championship games”

 I think this is where I learned the very most. I’ve never been extremely interested in public affairs or politics, but once I found Paul Cardall’s story and how I could also write about college football I became more interested. You’ll notice in my profile of Paul that all of my stories, all of my examples point towards one common theme: the joy of organ donation. I continually tie in every piece of detail I can and try to point the audience towards Paul’s miracle because someone else was willing to donate their heart so that he could live.  I also studied out all the different angles, plans and propositions that others had about improving the college football season and this helped me to piece together a proposal of my own and speak boldly and confidently knowing that I had heard both sides represented equally and was then able to proceed with my writing of these papers.

Writing from Sources I thoroughly enjoyed researching this information out. Especially after I thought I had created a genius proposal in my mind for the BCS and then I saw that others in the world were thinking well along the same lines as I was. There were and still are many great quotes from Senators, Attorney Governors, legendary coaches and even Barack Obama himself expressing their solutions for a playoff system. I both quoted them directly and used their words in context.  Works Cited  Associated Press. Lawmaker Proposing Bill to End BCS System. Sporting News, 2008  Burton, Rick. 6 Design I’m a very visual person. And I know that if I can look at a picture or a graph that gives me a summary or an idea of the magnitude of an issue then I am going to understand it better. In each of my papers I have made them rich with images. Images that I feel lend themselves to the reader’s aid. Like this graph for example, I used it in most of my papers and it really helps the audience understand the huge difference between what the BCS schools are getting and what the Non-BCS schools are missing out on.
