NLC - The Next Linear Collider Project IR Layout Tom Markiewicz SLAC LCWS Cornell 15 July 2003

Tom Markiewicz #2 of 15 IR Layout Issues IR Hall Dimensions Detector Access Model –Maintenance –Component Replacement Final Doublet Support Scheme Tungsten Mask Design and Support

Tom Markiewicz #3 of 15 IR Hall Dimensions Set by Knut Skarpass / Marty Breidenbach –~1999 –NLC Tunnel model then “cut & cover” –No push-back from accelerator side –“Small” & “Large” Detectors 33m 62m

Tom Markiewicz #4 of 15 Current Large Detector Access Model Door Support (3.2m) Endcap ECAL@ 3m Permanent Support / Moveable Shielding Pit Wall (14.8m) Moveable Shielding / Moveable Support 6.7m 10.4m

Tom Markiewicz #5 of 15 IR Halls In Mountainside (CA) or ~300’ Underground (DeKalb, IL) Point 1: Do we need all that space given cost of underground caverns, tunnels & shafts

Tom Markiewicz #6 of 15 Current Final Quad Support Scheme: Cantilever 40cm diameter Tube from DOOR CLOSED Position Must remove (red) platform and clamps that anchor end of tube to open door Point 2: Save 3.7m (-10.4-6.7) of extra cantilever but limit access, or is there a better way?

Tom Markiewicz #7 of 15 VXD/TPC Replacement If detector stays on the IP and one door is opened one can slide TPC 3.7m and expose central 2m of beamline Is this enough for VXD replacement? If Central Barrel of Detector and one door is slid to one side and the opposite door is opened 5.6m free space is available (TPC currently sized at 5.4m) How much real estate do we need to reserve for this type of activity?

Tom Markiewicz #8 of 15 IP Masks 1996-2000: L*=2.0m SD LD

Tom Markiewicz #9 of 15 IP Masks 2000-2001: L*=4.3m LD

Tom Markiewicz #10 of 15 IP Masks Snowmass 2001-2003: L*=3.8m SD

Tom Markiewicz #11 of 15 Changes to Masking due to getting real about and prototyping and stabilizing the final quad Cylindrical M2 W masking now OUTSIDE the support tube Demand that Masks & Pair-Luminosity monitor be supported in some “to be determined” manner from detector Allow length of conic M1 mask to grow back to 1999 lengths and assume its weight will also be borne by detector when vibration stabilization systems are active & symmetrize LD & SD Inner radial masses must be transferred to support tube when detector doors are open

Tom Markiewicz #12 of 15 LD Forward Masking, Calorimetry & Tracking 2003-06-01

Tom Markiewicz #13 of 15 SD Forward Masking, Calorimetry & Tracking 2003-06-01

Tom Markiewicz #14 of 15 Lum- PairMon @ z=3.5m 2cm radius 12.6cm radius 1cm radius

Tom Markiewicz #15 of 15 IP Girder Mechanical Test Fixture
