Module 10b: Wrapup IMT530: Organization of Information Resources Winter, 2007 Michael Crandall

IMT530- Organization of Information Resources2 Module 10b Outline Start with the domain Soergel’s model Modeling metadata Extracting metadata Defining rules Building subject access Enumerative vs. analytico-synthetic CVs All to support Cutter’s Objects

IMT530- Organization of Information Resources3 Mai’s Domain-Centered Approach

IMT530- Organization of Information Resources4 The Workings of the Black Box Soergel, 1985

IMT530- Organization of Information Resources5 Modeling Metadata A model represents a particular view of reality through a systematic set of rules –As you’ve seen with vocabularies, a representation is only that, not reality In information systems, we are attempting to represent objects and their relationships –This can become very complex, very quickly –A way to manage this complexity is critical for success Models allow multiple systems to interact and share information more effectively

IMT530- Organization of Information Resources6 Types of Metadata Administrative –Object management –Rights and access management –Maintenance and preservation –Meta-metadata for managing metadata Structural or technical –Describes relationships between parts –Enables recognition and use of objects by systems Descriptive –Describes characteristics of object –Physical and aboutness (subject)

IMT530- Organization of Information Resources7 Authority Control Any metadata element you’re using can benefit from authority control (in the broad sense we explored earlier in the class) –Even if you don’t need anything more than a rule, make it explicit and if possible build it into your data entry system (e.g., date formats) –If you have choices for term entry, define the values and restrict users to those alone (e.g., language codes, mime types, etc.) –Where possible, use standards for your reference to avoid in-house maintenance

IMT530- Organization of Information Resources8 Steps in Constructing CVs Define your domain Gather concepts –From user interviews, search logs, content analysis, preexisting vocabularies Select your approach –Hierarchical, faceted, flat lists Extract terminology Control your terms Organize your terms Maintain, maintain, maintain

IMT530- Organization of Information Resources9 Enumerated vs. Facets Enumerated classification (Hierarchical) –One-dimensional Dewey Decimal Classification System Library of Congress Classification System –Rigid Hierarchical –Gives a single schedule that enumerates fully the classes and their ready-made class numbers. Analytico-Synthetic (Faceted Classification) –Multi-dimensional –Clearly defined, mutually exclusive aspects, properties, or characteristics of a class or specific subject

IMT530- Organization of Information Resources10 Cutter’s Objects (Expanded) To enable a person to find (a book) an information object where (the author, title, or subject) some identifying information is known To show what (the library) an information system has by a given (author) entity on a given subject in a given (kind of literature) domain To assist in the choice of (a book) an information object by its (edition or its character) important characteristics

IMT530- Organization of Information Resources11 All in Context Remember that whenever you construct a metadata schema or controlled vocabulary, you are imposing a world view Make sure it fits the needs of your audience and doesn’t impose values that are outside the scope of your charter As the information specialist, you have a great deal of power, so use it wisely And have fun!!

IMT530- Organization of Information Resources12 Questions? If not, take a break- a spring break!!! Enjoy the time off, and your next quarter It’s been a pleasure having you in class
