2 What Is Healthy Communities? Concept first appeared in WHO 1986 Professor Len Duhl, UC Berkeley Increased involvement with personal health. Problem: Lack of partnership and participation by the general public to improve community health

3 Healthy Communities Foundation Founded by 2 Public Health Professors at UC Berkeley Goal is to build “Healthy Communities Information Network” – to promote awareness of community issues & to support community involvement. Started in Summer 2003 for Marin, CA

4 Goals Customizable Provides information –dashboard view of indicators on community life –community health initiatives –best practices Tools to –support community decision making –facilitate improvement plans –track efforts overtime Focuses on dashboard of indicators

5 First Persona & Scenario Nancy Fisher – MPH Student –Active, vocal, advocates community services and actions –Working on master’s thesis and internship on healthy behaviors for children. –Networks with other health professionals Scenario –Drafting a teaching program to combat childhood obesity in Marin –Needs to find related information, and programs developed elsewhere

6 Second Persona & Scenario Marcos Smith, Ph.D. –Public Health Research Professional –Interested in regional differences on health/lifestyle issues –Goal to find easy accessible data and share expertise on improvement suggestions Scenario –Project to evaluate water quality across communities in the Bay Area –Search for indicator, performs analysis and shares report

7 Third Persona & Scenario Maruice Law –Engineer recently relocated to Marin –Child has asthma –Concerned about air quality of living environment Scenario –Child’s asthma exacerbates after relocation –Needs to find out local air quality information and researches for solutions
