SUSTAINABLE BRIDGES PROJECT Masonry Arch Bridges Subgroup

Sustainable Bridges Project Objectives Members Work packages WP2: Survey WP3-5: Condition Assessment, Monitoring WP4: Loads, Capacity WP6: Repair and strengthening WP7-8: Demonstration, bridge tests WP9: Dissemination

Objectives Increase the transport capacity of existing bridges by allowing axle loads up to 33 tons for freight traffic with moderate speeds Increase the residual lifetime of existing bridges with up to 25 % Increase the capacity for passenger traffic with low axle loads by increasing the maximum speeds to up to 350 km/hour Enhance strengthening and repair systems

Members Czech Republic Denmark Finland France Germany Norway Poland Portugal Spain Sweden Switzerland United Kingdom

WP1 Start up and Classification WP2 Guidance and Review WP4 Load, Capacity and Resistance WP6 Repair and Strengthening WP9 Training and Dissemination WP7 Demonstration, Field testing on old bridges WP3 Condition Assessment, Inspection WP8 Demonstration, Monitoring on New Bridges WP5 Monitoring Work packages

40% of all European bridges is masonry 60% of masonry bridges are over 100 years old WP2 Survey

WP3-5 Condition Assessment, Monitoring Acoustic Emssion Technique University of Salford

Toolbox (example)

1.Long-term effect of traffic loading on masonry arches: Fatigue limits Critical modes of failure Effect of deteriorated masonry. 2.Soil-structure interaction. 3.Modelling deteriorated masonry. 4.Probabilistic assessment methods. WP4 Loads, Capacity

WP6 Repair and strengthening Glass fibre sheet Steel studs FRP reinforcement + Radial pinning

WP7-8 Demonstration, bridge tests
