2 Simplifying polynomial expressions Can we simplify using order of operations (PEMDAS)? –Simplify inside parentheses, combine like terms, multiply coefficients? What operation are we performing? –Multiplication Distribute ONLY OVER ADDITION or SUBTRACTION Use product rule: (a m · a n = a m + n ) –Addition or subtraction Combine like terms Are there exponents? –Use power rule: – Product to a power rule: –Write out meaning of exponents if necessary: x 2 = x · x –Do not make up exponent rules!

3 Test Friday 3/2 Simplifying expressions –Exponent properties (4.1, 4.2) Know how to apply the specific properties (when to add powers, when to multiply powers, etc…) Know how to handle negative exponents –Addition and subtraction of polynomials (4.4, 4.7) –Multiplication of polynomials (4.5, 4.7)
