12th January 2006Cockcroft, Liverpool/Daresbury1 ATF, ATF2 and a Beam Diagnostics Section for the ILC ATF, ATF2 and a Beam Diagnostics Section for the ILC Cockcroft/ASTeC Workshop ILC/LHC Session Jan 12-13 Leo Jenner

12th January 2006Cockcroft, Liverpool/Daresbury2 Linear Accelerator Beam Diagnostics Beam Delivery System: Skew Correction – to correct for earlier magnet manufacturing/positional errors Emittance Measurement Beam Switchyard – to send off-energy bunches to a the beam dump Collimators – to remove off-energy particles from beam halo Beam Energy Spectrometer

12th January 2006Cockcroft, Liverpool/Daresbury3 Optics tests underway at ATF

12th January 2006Cockcroft, Liverpool/Daresbury4 Laserwire Laserwire measures forward scattered gammas and e - ’s Much better resolution than wires achievable Latest result: No result!

12th January 2006Cockcroft, Liverpool/Daresbury5 ATF2 ‘ATF has been serving as a unique test facility for establishing the feasibility of producing and controlling the ultra-low emittance beam that is required for linear colliders.’ Goal of ATF2: transverse focussing to 40nm

12th January 2006Cockcroft, Liverpool/Daresbury6 Skew Correction Emittance Measurement Energy Spectrometer (for emergency dump) Polarimeter Collimators Dispersion Measurement Energy Spectrometer Sextupoles Octopoles Final Focus

12th January 2006Cockcroft, Liverpool/Daresbury7 Some Optics design using MAD Energy Spectrometer: ‘Dog Leg’ - the beam is bent off course then bent back again, the energy can be determined by the amount of bending a fixed magnet achieves. Skew Correction (0-130m) and Emittance Measurement (130- 200m) Section: Tunable, rotated quadrupoles correct for magnet errors. Four wire scanners then measure the beam size in independent phases. – x – y
