Energy Efficiency 4 Goal –To find cost effective ways to improve the energy efficiency of Habitat homes. –To convey this information to the future home owners. 4 Approach –Using Energy 10 software, we are simulating the energy use of a standard home for a year. –We are also analyzing the cost effectiveness of various home improvements using the same process. –Finally, we will present this and other information to potential homeowners in a concise, useable format.

Energy Efficiency - Energy 10 4 Inputs –Air infiltration model –Lighting profiles –Floor plan –Local utility costs –Shading –Insulation 4 Modifications –2x4 vs 2x6 exterior walls –1’ vs 2’ overhangs –Window size and type –Central air vs window a/c vs attic fan –Inside vs outside ducts –Furnace efficiency –Air infiltration (house wrap)

4 Progress –Complete model of a Habitat home in Energy 10 –2x4 vs 2x6 wall analysis –Overhang analysis Energy Efficiency - Energy 10

2x4 vs 2x6 Construction Energy Efficiency - Energy 10

2x4 vs 2x6 exterior wall results Annual Utility Costs 2x4 exterior wall $ 612 2x6 exterior wall$ 585 Annual Savings$ 27 Modification Cost$ 300 Energy Efficiency - Energy 10

1’ vs 2’ overhang Energy Efficiency - Energy 10

1’ vs 2’ Overhang results Annual Utility Costs 1’ Overhang $ 612 2’ Overhang$ 613 Annual Cost$ 1 Energy Efficiency - Energy 10

Energy Efficiency - Presentation Software Presented by: Adam Stanczak An information package is being developed to incorporate the different forms of information that the team has created for Habitat for Humanity. This package includes the standardized floor plans currently being developed, the construction and energy analysis results, and other information that has been gathered in previous projects. Go ! Go !

Project Integration: Incorporating the two projects More economical and energy-efficient homes 4 Energy-10 Output 4 Construction costs 4 Current blueprints

– Construction: walls, roof, window, insulation – Air Infiltration – Air Conditioning 4 Output of utility savings versus original costs for different design changes May 1999 Deliverables 4 Book of 8-10 standardized blueprints
