2 * What Achieves Unity:  Discuss only 1 idea in a paragraph; two or three aspects of the same idea if they are closely related to each other.  Every supporting sentence must directly explain or prove the main idea.  Do not include unrelated or irrelevant information.

14 The Introductory Paragraph:  Two part: 1. a few general statements about your subject;  2. Thesis statement: names the specific topic and the controlling ideas or major divisions of the topic.  Specifics on thesis statement:  A. states the main topic;  B. lists subdivisions;  C. indicates organizations (logical order);  D. usually the last sentence.

15 Thesis Statement: Examples and Punctuation  When there are more than one subtopics– 1. use a colon (:).  Ex. Prejudice arises from three basic causes: childhood conditioning, ignorance, and fear.  2. Use correlative conjunctions (both… and; not only… but also; neither… nor, etc.)  Ex. Young people in my culture have less freedom than young people in the United States not only in their choice of life-style but also in their choice of careers.
