Hybrid Hard Disk Drive Radhika Patel

Basic Terms  HDD (Hard Disk Drive): storage center for data  SSD (Solid State Drive): same thing as a hard drive, but with no moving parts Example: USB flash drive, internal memory on cell phones and cameras

HDD  A hard drive is cheap and that’s why consumers prefer that option.  Typical price range for a HDD is $74.99 to $120.99 for a terabyte (1024 GB).  The typical cost of a HDD is about 7 cents per GB which shows its extreme cheapness.

HDD continued  Performance of a HDD: Base speed of a low-end hard drive is 5400 rpm (revolutions per minute) and a high-end hard drive would be 7200 rpm.  The faster the disk spins, the faster the computer performance will be. In other words, the boot time and/or loading applications will be faster, hence more heat generation.

SSD  It will boot the operating system much quicker and applications will appear much faster since it has no moving parts. Compared to the HDD, SSD produces little to no heat.  Price: Ranges from $130 for 40 GB to $800 for 256 GB. This gives us an estimated cost of $3 per GB.

Comparison HDD  Speed: slower than SSD  Cost: cheap  Reliability: technology is mature and failures are rare SSD  Speed: faster as there are no moving parts  Cost: expensive  Reliability: technology is fairly new, can operate reliably in harsh environments as there are no moving parts

Comparison cont. HDD  Storage Capacity: 1TB+, more storage capacity available SSD  Storage Capacity: 256GB and 512GB becoming available, thus less storage capacity available

Hybrid Hard Disk Drive  HHDD combines the disk of a HDD and the memory chips of a SSD.  Combines the performance of the SSD with the price and capacity of the HDD, hence the term Hybrid Hard Disk Drive.  HHDD uses 128MB or more of high speed flash memory (embedded in hard drive).  So, when booting a PC, operating system loads data from flash memory first, speeding up boot time and also removes need to quickly spin up the drive (saves power consumption).  Expect HHDD to come out in end of 2010 or beginning of 2011.

Pros/Cons  Much cheaper than SSD  Higher performance  Product hasn’t came out so we don’t know if it is good or not  Not much information has been revealed regarding the new HHDD’s  All information revealed are estimations
