“ C reativity to the neXt power” 5/5/2003 Overview 1.Definition 2.Research 3.Brainstorm 4.Vote 5.Focus 6.Delegate 7.Prototype 8.Test –survey 9.Refine 10. Present Design Process Steps:

“ C reativity to the neXt power” To create a new undergraduate major that: Fosters creativity with applications in today’s world. Hands-on and project-oriented Meaningful and interesting Step 1: Define DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions

“ C reativity to the neXt power” Internet Surveys Course Catalogs Asking others Step 2: Research DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions

“ C reativity to the neXt power” After our first brainstorming session we voted on the following top ten Design ideas: 1.Design Engineering6. Food/Culinary Eng. 2.Home Engineering7. Ergonomic Engineering 3.Criminology/Forensic Eng.8. Music/Acoustic Eng. 4.Game Engineering9. Energy Resource Eng. 5.Sports Engineering10. Animation/Graphics Eng. 6 “ C reativity to the neXt power” Acoustics Engineering Forensic and Criminology Engineering Involves Design and strategic decision making. It is the application of statistical and design principles. Study of sound, optics, vibration and noise, how these are generated, their relationship to music and how they can be enhanced and suppressed. Step 5, 6, 7-Focus, Delegate & Prototype Applied Strategic Game Engineering The investigation and analysis of criminal cases, as well as the reconstruction of failures in buildings, structures, vehicles, and other systems DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions

“ C reativity to the neXt power” Survey Results Step 8: Test DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions

“ C reativity to the neXt power” One survey designed for each group: 1.Prospective students 2.Family and friends 3.Employers 0.65 * (Prospective students) + 0.15 * (Family and friends) + 0.2 * (Employers) DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions

“ C reativity to the neXt power” Sample Survey Questions DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions Students: When accidents or malfunctions happen, I am curious as to why and how. Employers: I believe there exists a sufficiently large market for the investigation and reconstruction of crimes and engineering failures. Family & friends: Well-designed games are important in a child’s development, both physically and mentally. (Scale: 1 – strongly disagree, 7 – strongly agree)

“ C reativity to the neXt power” Survey Results – Round 1 DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions

“ C reativity to the neXt power” Survey Results – Round 2 (10 more Cal freshmen and sophomores) DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions

“ C reativity to the neXt power” Forensics and Criminology Engineering The teaching and research activities of the Department of Forensics and Criminology Engineering (F&CE) concern the investigation and analysis of criminal cases, as well as the reconstruction of accidents and failures in machines, structures, and other systems. DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions

Topics This agenda covers a broad range of specialized disciplines, including: - Genetics, cell physiology, and cell anatomy - Computer science, networks, and systems - Statics and dynamics - Microstructure/physical/ properties of materials DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions “ C reativity to the neXt power”

Due to its multidisciplinary nature, F&CE has been broken down into three specialized paths: - Option I Failure Analysis - Option II Bio-Chemical Analysis - Option III Computer Forensics DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions “ C reativity to the neXt power” Specializations

Option I- Failure Analysis The study of determining how and why entities (such as structures and vehicles) fail. Students will analyze material damage, mechanical failures and the reconstruction of crimes. Lower Division E45-Properties of materials E36-Statics E37-Dynamics Upper Division Civil Engineering Mechanical Engineering F&CE 125 Deformation and Fracture of Materials DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions “ C reativity to the neXt power”

Option II-Bio-Chemical Analysis The students learn the techniques to investigate evidence from DNA sequences, polymorphic proteins and enzymes and antigenic variants found in various body fluids and samples. Lower Division Biology 1A Biology 1B Chemistry 3A Upper Division Chemical Engineering Toxicology Molecular and Cell Biology Bio Engineering DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions “ C reativity to the neXt power”

Option III- Computer Forensics Lower Division CS61A-Intro to Programming and Computer Science CS61B-Fundamental dynamic data structures CS61C-Operation of Digital Computers Upper Division Electrical Engineering Information Mgmt. Systems Computer Science F&CE 121-Information Data Tracking Students will study data identification, recovery, despoliation, security, and validation. Graduates can apply these concepts to computer fraud, hacking, identity theft, and other electronic crimes DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions “ C reativity to the neXt power”

DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions Comments of prototype “ C reativity to the neXt power” “In my first year, I don’t feel that I am informed enough to help me decide on which specific area I want to pursue, so that I can take the prerequisites that I need to take”. - Andres (MCB) “I’m curious to hear from professionals in this field because I don’t know much about it”. - Natalie (ME) “Is Law Enforcement an Engineering practice?” - Dan (EECS)

Step 9-Refinements A F&CE freshman seminar was added to give students an opportunity to explore the 3 F&CE options The 4 sub-majors were reduced to 3 because investigation and law enforcement were not considered engineering disciplines A course in engineering ethics is now to be taken in the second year instead of the fourth year. DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions “ C reativity to the neXt power”

DefineResearchBrainstormVoteFocusDelegatePrototypeTestRefineConclusions 1.Survey: ask questions that a person cannot automatically say “yes” or “no” to. Creating a survey is not as easy as we thought. 2.“Persona” should also be given in the context of the user, employer and professor 3.During brainstorming, keep all ideas. After you eliminate an idea, it may still be used later on, specially after feedback. “ C reativity to the neXt power”
