4. 4 Present Simple Present Simple is used –To describe natural process  Ice melts in water. The world revolves around the Sun. The Sun rises in the East. –To describe a habit or something that is done regularly  I play the piano everyday. Monica goes jogging every morning. Oscar does Yoga every week. Most women loves chocolates.

5. 5 Present Simple (cont.) –To describe a situation that exists right now I have only 4500 rupiah in my pocket now. She doesn’t recognize me. Harry needs a dictionary right now.

6. 6 Present Continuous To describe an action that is happening (and still continuing) at the time of speaking: –The lecturer is standing in front of the class. –Fred is looking at the mirror now. –Mother is cooking in the kitchen at the moment. When the action is only temporary: –Father is working on a project in Bali. (He usually works somewhere else.) When the future action is already scheduled: –I am leaving at 7 am tomorrow. –We’re seeing our lecturer next Wednesday.

8. 8 Common mistakes 1. Double Verb: Wrong:I am study at Binus. Correct: I study at Binus. (regularly) I am studying 15 th Century English Literature. (this semester only) 2. Use continuous verb for non-progressive verbs* Wrong:He is thinking he is a genius. Correct:He thinks he is a genius. *)see Azar, ”Understanding and using English Grammar” page 11 The verb ‘think’ does not generally occur in continuous form, as it is a mental state. Unless the speaker is still in the process of deciding at that time. e.g. “I am thinking of going to Russia next Summer, would you like to come?”

9. 9 Conclusions Simple Present Tense is used to describe habits, natural processes, or a situation that exists at the moment of speaking Present Continuous tense is used to describe an action that is in progress, a temporary event, or actions that have been planned. To describe a current event you can use simple present and present continuous.
