1 ITEMS IN THE FUR TRADE Pictures and Explanation of Some Fur Trade Items.

2 Pewter Spoons  Spoons were commonly made of wood, horn, silver or gold until the early 14th century, when the development of pewter made spoons affordable to the general public.  Hundreds of tons of pewter products were shipped to America during the Colonial period.

3 Brass Kettles

4 Powder Horn  A powder horn would have carried gun powder. This container was often made from buffalo horn.

5 Fish Hooks Fishhooks were essential to the fur trader. A trapper or trader could be out in the wilderness for an extended period of time and provide himself with fish.

6 Flint  Pieces of flint are part of what made guns work.  When flint and steel are struck together, sparks are generated.

7 Flintlock Musket  In the1700’s, the flintlock musket was a major trade item.

8 Knives   Metal knives were a valued trade items. This knife has a rounded tip designed for taking the skin off animals.

9 Hudson Bay Company Blankets  Blankets made of wool became a trade- mark of the fur trade era.  Blankets were often worn as robes or shawls for added warmth.

12 Bayonets

13 Worms  A gun worm was used to clean the barrel. The worm is nothing more than one or two twisted tines which can be threaded onto the barrel.
