1 Candle in the Wind ELA 20-2

2 Candle In The Wind Loneliness was tough The toughest role you ever played Hollywood created a superstar And pain was the price you paid Even when you died Oh the press still hounded you All the papers had to say Was that Marilyn was found in the nude Goodbye Norma Jean From the young man in the 22nd row Who sees you as something as more than sexual More than just our Marilyn Monroe Goodbye Norma Jean Though I never knew you at all You had the grace to hold yourself While those around you crawled They crawled out of the woodwork And they whispered into your brain They set you on the treadmill And they made you change your name And it seems to me you lived your life Like a candle in the wind Never knowing who to cling too When the rain set inn And I would have liked to have known you But I was just a kid Your candle burned out long before Your legend ever did

3 Candle In The Wind - discussion
What words or phrases from the song do you associate with Marilyn Monroe? Does fame change people? Provide an example of a famous person to illustrate your ideas. Can stars be hurt or exploited by the industry they work in or by the public images they create for themselves? Provide an example of a famous person to illustrate your ideas.

4 Goodbye England's Rose Goodbye England's rose
May you ever grow in our hearts You were the grace that placed itself Where lives were torn apart. You called out to our country And you whispered to those in pain Now you belong to heaven And the stars spell out your name. And it seems to me you lived your life Like a candle in the wind Never fading with the sunset When the rain set in And your footsteps will always fall here Along England's greenest hills Your candle's burned out long before Your legend ever will. Loveliness we've lost These empty days without your smile This torch we'll always carry For our nation's golden child And even though we try The truth brings us to tears All our words cannot express The joy you brought us through the years. And it seems to me you lived your life Like a candle in the wind Never fading with the sunset When the rain set in And your footsteps will always fall here Along England's greenest hills Your candle's burned our long before Your legend ever will. Goodbye England's rose May you ever grow in our hearts You were the grace that placed itself Where lives were torn apart Goodbye England's rose From a country lost without your soul Who'll miss the wings of your compassion More than you'll ever know. And it seems to me you lived your life Like a candle in the wind Never fading with the sunset When the rain set in And you footsteps will always fall here Along England's greenest hills Your candle's burned out long before Your legend ever will.

5 comparison How did the lyrics make you feel?
Do you think Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana led happy lives? Explain. Did either one have privacy? Explain. Do you feel sorry for either one? Explain. What is the purpose / theme of each song? Are they the same or different?

6 What do you think the following lines mean?
"Loneliness was tough / The toughest role you ever played.“ "You had the grace to hold yourself / While those around you crawled.“ You were the grace that placed itself / Where lives were torn apart. "Your candle burned out long before / Your legend ever did."

7 Marilyn Monroe  "Hollywood is a place where they’ll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss, and fifty cents for your soul.“ -- Marilyn Monroe  In Marilyn’s famous quote, we receive an insight into the "special significance," the nagging but indistinct "warning" evoked by both Marilyn’s and Diana’s deaths. The warning is to be cognizant of our participation in the myth of celebrity, which merchandises the images and tramples the souls of real people.

8 Prince Harry Helping AIDS Victims Sep 17, 2004 Associated Press
In a new documentary about his volunteer work with AIDS victims in Africa, Prince Harry, son of the late Princess Diana, said he's determined to carry on her legacy. The 20-year-old royal said all the bad "stuff that's come out" about his mother in the media is a shame, given all the good she did as a high-profile volunteer in charity work around the world. He said he and his brother, Prince William, try to lead normal lives, but that is often "very difficult," given the media spotlight they must live under. "I believe I've got a lot of my mother in me, basically, and I think she'd want us to do this, me and my brother," he said of his work with AIDS orphans.

9 theme…  "I would have liked to love you, but I was just a kid: Your candle burned out long before your legend ever did."  We didn’t love either Marilyn or Diana. How could we? We didn’t know them. And if we loved the ideas of them constructed for us by the media, perhaps we should heed the warning and examine what was lacking in ourselves that led us to covet these illusions and sacrifice the women behind them.

10 SPEECH Prepare a two-minute speech on ONE of the following themes dealt with by these song lyrics: the high price of fame the difference between public image and personal identity why young people find celebrities of the past interesting the difference between surface attractiveness and inner beauty
