The Call to Holiness 2 Cor. 6:14-18 2 Tim. 1:8-10

The Meaning  1 Cor. 1:1-2  When referring to God  Refers to the sense in which He is different or set apart from us  Refers to His absolute moral purity (1Jn. 1:5)

The Meaning  We are called to be holy (1Peter. 1:15-16)  The call involves the same two things for us  We are called to be set apart; we are called to moral purity.

The Meaning 1. Set Apart  There is a sense in which this is done to us and for us.  We are “set apart” by God as holy when we trust in Jesus. That is we are set apart as BELONGING TO GOD.

The Meaning 1. Set Apart  Reflected in the word church  Ecclesia – called out and assembled by God  1 Peter 2:9

The Meaning 1. Set Apart  Reflected in the fact that we are called saints  Eph. 1:1  Saints refers to ordinary Christians

The Meaning 1. Set apart  We are to become in practice what we are in status (Eph. 4:1)  It is always God doing the work in us (Phil. 2:13)  We are called to exercise our wills (2 Cor. 6)

The Meaning 2. Purity  1 Peter 1:15-16 – “Be pure because I am pure.”  Matthew 5:48  THE GOAL FOR WHICH WE ARE STRIVING IS MORAL PERFECTION

Great players

The Method 1. Know the Target  Romans 12:2  There must be a commitment to Christian education from Scripture

The Method 2. Be in the game  You must be convinced of the importance of this matter, and pursue it.  Do not presume upon grace (Matt. 7:21-24)  Hebrews 12:14; Acts 26:20

The Method 3. Seek to be a total player  Don’t confuse this with some outward non- conformity.  Matthew 23:23  People are not our measure—GOD IS OUR MEASURE.

The Method 4. Killing and Cultivating  Galatians 5:16-26  Put out flames; then concentrate on dousing the embers. Don’t falsely reason:

False Reason “I can’t control the urge, and so I’ll do the deed for Jesus said the thought is as bad as the act; after all sin is sin.” That is false reasoning, it is untrue and it is a misunderstanding of Jesus.

The Method 4. Killing and Cultivating  Matthew 5:27-28: Jesus was simply saying that the intent of the law runs deeper than simple outward conformity.  There are degrees of sin (John 19:11)

The Method 4. Killing and Cultivating  Pray and Act—Do whatever it takes  Increasingly focus on cultivating the fruit of the Spirit.
