2 Today’s Topics What are Communication Awards? What are Specialty Awards? Eligibility and General Rules How to Apply? Example Entries

3 Why Enter? This is one of very few ways to get recognition for the outstanding job you do as 4-H Agents! “Toot your own horn!” Need professional development opportunities for yearly performance reviews and promotions. Plus you might win money!

4 Awards State Winner – awards at state’s discretion (certificates, plaques, cash, etc.) Southern Region Winner – certificates and plaques National Winner – plaques and money State Winner Feature Story

5 What are Communication Awards? Objective: To recognize TAE4-HA members for significant accomplishments in presenting 4-H to the general public, civic groups, 4-H groups, or individuals through public information methods.

6 What are Specialty Awards? Objective: To recognize TAE4-HA members for significant accomplishments in special programs or events related to specific program areas, audiences or delivery methods.

7 Eligibility Any member of TAE4-HA who was a member in good standing at least the prior year as well as the current year is eligible for the awards. Dues must have been paid by December 15th, 2010 for your entry to be considered. Team awards must include at least one TAE4-HA member. TAE4-HA members receive plaques, and additional team members receive certificates.

8 General Rules Agents may submit one entry per class. All entries must be produced from January 1 to December 31 of 2010. Previous state award winners may not enter the same class in consecutive years. All state awards will be presented at the TAE4-HA conference. State Deadline – March 1 or earlier

13 Support Material Next, we need the support material for your application. – This might be several things, depending on the category you have entered. – Each category will have certain guidelines for what is included as support material. – Find more information on specific categories at: http://nae4ha.com/awards.htm

16 Educational Piece Can be team or individual. Purpose is to educate through accurate, concise information on one subject. Not a promotional piece. Multimedia may be included. Must all apply to one subject. Entry is one piece.

19 Education Package Can be team or individual. Purpose is to educate through accurate, concise information on one subject. Must consist of 2 or more components of communication awards, identify the 2 major components although an overall assessment will be made. All components must be packaged in one unit, electronic media may be included.

21 Exhibit To provide educational and/or promotional material that is accurate, concise and makes the audience respond in a positive way. Must have at least one picture of the exhibit along with a description of where and how it was used. Photo must clearly show the units of the exhibit.

24 Feature Story Purpose is to capture the mood of the event or person(s) and create reader interest. Is not a news story. May tell an unusual situation or be a strong human interest story. Have a “catchy” lead and are written in an entertaining style.

27 Media Presentation To provide educational/promotional information that is accurate, concise and holds the audience’s attention. Must produce the program using PowerPoint, Corel Presentations or similar software package. A hard copy or web address of the presentation must be submitted.

28 News Story Purpose is to present factual information or results in a manner clear and understandable for reader. No stories based on individual or team accepted. No copies, rewritten, adapted or submitted word-for-word published material accepted. Article must be original work of the applicants.

32 Periodical Publication Can be team or individual. This is an information piece designed to inform, update and make the reader respond in a positive way. Examples include newsletter, state association newsletters, magazines, tabloids, etc. Enter will consist of 2 issues of choice, but both must be from the same series. May be in printed or electronic format, electronically produced publications must include web address.

35 Personal Column Purpose is to develop a personal style of writing for publication in any type of print media. It should be pertinent, appropriate, credible information congruent with the writer’s style. Submit 3 samples of original copy of column from 3 different newspaper issues.

36 Promotional Piece Can be team or individual. Purpose is to attract reader’s attention and make readers respond in a positive way. Maximum size is 22” X 28”. Examples include; posters, brochures, flyers, newspaper insert, t-shirt, etc.

40 Promotional Package Can be team or individual. Purpose is to attract audience member’s attention and make them respond in a positive way. Must consist of 2 or more components of communication awards such as video, brochure, podcast, poster, bookmark, tabloid, electronic media such as web page, power point or any combination of promotional pieces. All components must be packaged together as a unit.

41 Published Photo Purpose is to tell a story through a photo. May be black and white or color photo and published or printed. Photo must be no larger than 8” X 10”. Submit original photo and published copy, include text that appeared with photo. Photo must be original work of the applicant.

45 Radio Program Video Program Purpose: To provide educational information that is accurate, concise, and makes listener respond in a positive manner or to attract listener's attention, hold attention, and make listener respond in a positive way. If a series of lessons, enter only one or designate which lesson on the tape or CD should be reviewed for judging. Indicate length of recorded segment to be reviewed. If promotion spots, a collection may be entered; however, indicate which is to be judged. Individual/team must produce the program. All tapes or CD’s must be mailed in a cassette tape box or a case/sleeve plainly marked with class and applicant name(s).

48 Diversity Award Purpose: To recognize outstanding effort and accomplishments in achieving and sustaining diversity in the NAE4-HA organization, programs, and/or audiences. Diversity is defined as acknowledging, understanding, appreciating, valuing, and celebrating differences among people relative to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran status, or sexual orientation. (List is not all- inclusive and is not limited to those that are mentioned.) Include no more than three (3) pages of narrative addressing the award criteria and Three (3) letters of support, one of which may be from an Extension administrator or supervisor.

49 Educational Technology Award Purpose: To recognize the use of technology (such as computers, video, web pages, etc.) in delivering or managing educational programs; to expand the use of technology education in 4-H; to promote logical problem-solving techniques using educational technologies. Include a success story limited to five (5) pages on how you have applied educational technology to your work and the impact to the intended audience. Individual or Team entries. The targeted audience may be youth, adult, or a combination. Adult audience may include staff, volunteers, or other youth educators.

50 Excellence in 4-H Club Support Purpose: To encourage and recognize the efforts of Extension professionals who support and strengthen their 4-H club program. A club is "an organized unit providing a long term experience for youth and adults". Programs nominated for this award may have taken several years to implement or may be short- term, single year efforts. An individual cannot receive this national award more than once. State the effort's goals and objectives. Indicate program need. Describe outcomes or impacts. How did the effort strengthen your 4-H program? Limit supplementary materials to three (3) pages. You may include photos, news clippings, or letters, etc. National winner receives $500.

51 Excellence in Teamwork Purpose: To encourage and recognize outstanding Extension programs or projects conducted by a team that demonstrate effective performance and significant results (impact) at community, area, state or multi- state levels. Entries must be submitted by a team and limited to ten (10) members. Program/project must have been conducted in the past year. Program must involve two (2) or more different program areas (i.e. Agriculture, 4-H Youth Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, Natural Resources, or Community Development).

52 Excellence in Camping Purpose: To recognize outstanding effort (Individual and Team) by members in youth development through 4-H camping, practice, evaluation, or research. Description and scope of the camping program, evaluation, or research. Description of any collaborative efforts. Description of demonstrated educational impact of program on youth, the 4-H program, or the community. If applicable, how adult and teen leaders and other youth were involved in major leadership roles in the program. Describe innovative teaching and learning strategies used, if applicable. Two (2) standard (8 1/2 x 11) pages of supporting materials may be included, such as newspaper clippings, photographs, etc.

53 Excellence in Natural Resources/ Environmental Education Purpose is to recognize outstanding effort (Individual and Team) by staff in Natural Resources/Environmental Education. Describe the program, project or event, and the number of people reached. How did the effort demonstrate collaborative programming with other natural resource agencies/organizations? Describe the educational impact of the program, project or event upon the community and/or 4-H program. How was this determined? How were adults, teen leaders, and other youth involved in major leadership roles in the program, project or event? Be specific.

54 Excellence in Teen Programming Purpose is to provide recognition for outstanding programs conducted for and with teen audiences. To gain national recognition for program accomplishments relative to scholarly and creative activities, teaching, and/or research effectiveness and to show evidence or collaboration with others who help meet community teens' needs. To strengthen the commitment to programs with teen audiences. Individual: Programs developed by an Agent or county staff for primary use in a single county or area. Encourages networking with others, but primary programming was for a single community. Team: Must show evidence of joint planning and implementation by two (2) or more county/state individuals.

55 Excellence in Urban 4-H Programming Purpose: To recognize outstanding efforts by members in the area of Urban 4-H Programming. To strengthen the commitment to Urban Programming curriculum. The nominee should have conducted the program or activity within the last two (2) years, and it should be part of the ongoing 4-H program in the county. Youth participants must live in an urban community or the program must take place in an urban community. For these purposes, an urban community is defined as a contiguous community with a total population of at least 50,000 and a population density of 1,000 per square mile.

56 Excellence in Animal Science Programming Purpose: To recognize outstanding effort by members in youth development through Animal Science programming, evaluation, or research projects. Description of the animal science programming, evaluation, or research effort. Description of collaborative efforts with industry, agencies, or organizations. Description of demonstrated educational impact of the program on youth, the 4-H program, or the community. Description of innovative teaching and learning strategies used Two standard (8 ½ x 11) pages of supporting material may be included, such as newspaper clippings, photographs, etc.
