What’s New –ConfigMgr 2012 OSD –MDT 2012 Beta 2 Inside an OS deployment task sequence –What’s not new –Stepping through the process Q&A Agenda

Boot image improvements –Hierarchy-wide boot media –Unattended OS installation –Prestart command hooks Task sequence improvements –Preconfigure User Device Affinity –Support for new application model –Enhancements to user state migration steps Offline servicing for OS images –Apply Windows updates to existing OS image packages Driver import improvements –Options for how to handle duplicates Improved PXE distribution point scalability –Potentially every DP can provide PXE services 64-bit task sequence engine –Everything is now 64-bit on 64-bit OSes, including the task sequence engine What’s New: ConfigMgr 2012 OS Deployment

Support for Configuration Manager 2012 RC1 –Still supports ConfigMgr 2007 too, but not earlier versions of ConfigMgr 2012 New User Driven Installation components –Extensible Wizard, Designer –No more web service Improved partitioning logic –Create partition structure based on OS being deployed –Always deploy new OS to the same partition as the existing one when refreshing New support for PowerShell scripts in a task sequence –Integrate with task sequence environment –Capture output into BDD.LOG and progress to UI Many other small enhancements and bug fixes –Additional user state flexibility Lite Touch enhancements too… What’s New: MDT 2012 Beta 2

Try out MDT 2012 Beta 2 now! –Sign up for Connect via http://aka.ms/MDTBeta if you haven’t alreadyhttp://aka.ms/MDTBeta –Download the beta and install it in your lab –Provide feedback through the Connect website Be ready to implement once ConfigMgr 2012 is generally available –H1 calendar year 2012 –MDT 2012 will release at the same time as ConfigMgr 2012 MDT 2012: Call to Action

Few changes in the task sequence engine –The mechanics and behaviors are the same, regardless of product ConfigMgr 2007, ConfigMgr 2012, MDT Lite Touch) –Just some minor bug fixes and higher-level changes (e.g. new actions) So this session is more about the way the engine works –How each step is started –How configuration details are passed to each step –What actually does the work Inside a Task Sequence: What’s Not New

TSManager manages the process: –Choose the next enabled step whose conditions are satisfied –Set local task sequence variables defined for the step (but only if global variables aren’t set) –Execute the command line for the step –Evaluate the results (return code, continue on error settings) –Repeat So let’s walk through a running task sequence, step-by- step –A typical MDT-created ConfigMgr task sequence, with a few tweaks so that we can interrupt the process… Inside a Task Sequence: Stepping Through the Process
