PSALM 93:1-5* (3/5) 3The seas, O LORD, have lifted up, they lifted up their voice; The seas have lifted up their waves and made a mighty noise.

PSALM 93:1-5* (4/5) 4The LORD, enthroned on high, is strong; more powerful is he Than thunder of the ocean’s waves or breakers of the sea.

PSALM 93:1-5* (5/5) 5Your royal statutes, LORD, stand firm; unchanging is your word. And holiness adorns your house for endless days, O LORD.

PSALM 89:5-9 (5/5) 9Ev’n in the raging of the sea thou over it dost reign; And when the waves thereof do swell, thou stillest them again.

UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN  Most Holy Lord,  we confess that we have sinned against you  in thought, word, and deed,  by what we have done,  and by what we have left undone.

UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN  We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength.  We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.

UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN  In your mercy forgive what we have been,  help us amend what we are,  and direct what we shall be,

UNISON CONFESSION OF SIN  so that we may delight in your will  and walk in your ways,  to the glory of your holy name.  Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Scripture Reading and Sermon JESUS THE MENTOR: ‘… but because you say so … ’ Reading: Luke 5:1-11 (p. 1032)

Luke 5:1-11 (p. 1032)  1 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God,  2 he saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.  3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

Luke 5:1-11 (p. 1032)  4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch."  5 Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets."  6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.

Luke 5:1-11 (p. 1032)  7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.  8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!"

Luke 5:1-11 (p. 1032)  9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,  10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men."  11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

JESUS THE MENTOR (Luke 5) ‘… because you say so … ’  HOW does the Kingdom of God ADVANCE?  Mentoring: One person at a time.  Spotlight in Luke 5 on Peter’s terror- stricken reaction to Jesus. The Sea of Galilee (= Lake of Gennesaret)

1- RECOGNISE YOUR KING  1-2: Peter is in earshot.  3: Peter becomes more entangled in Jesus’ net…  4-5: The relationship is no longer on Peter’s terms: Jesus is authoritative, even about fishing!  5: ‘… because you say so … ’ = literally “at your word.”  JESUS calls the shots! Fishing near Capernaum

2 - FALL BEFORE YOUR KING 1 - RECOGNISE YOUR KING  6-7: The only LIMIT to the catch is the number of boats available!  8-10: All about Jesus’ Authority  Echo of Psalm 8: You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. Near Sunset: the nets are ready at Galilee

2 - FALL BEFORE YOUR KING 1 - RECOGNISE YOUR KING  8b: ‘…he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!"'  Like ASLAN: Jesus just seems to get bigger.  Peter’s greatest sin: not bowing to Jesus’ Authority. Near Sunset: the nets are ready at Galilee

3 - DRAW OTHERS TO YOUR KING 1 - RECOGNISE YOUR KING 2 - FALL BEFORE YOUR KING  10b-11: The catch of fish is forgotten. The old career is forgotten!  Now on: catch men!  Wrong time? Wrong gifts? Wrong place?  But Jesus has authority. “…from now on you WILL catch men." The net-maker’s needle

3 - DRAW OTHERS TO YOUR KING 1 - RECOGNISE YOUR KING 2 - FALL BEFORE YOUR KING  TO REFLECT ON:  Think of just ONE PERSON to pray for, to love, and to speak to for Jesus Christ. The net-maker’s needle

Psalm 30:2-3,10-12* (p. 34) 2LORD God, in need I cried to you and you restored my health. 3O LORD, you brought me from the grave and saved my soul from death.

Psalm 30:2-3,10-12* (2/4) 10 Hear as I cry, O LORD my God, and listen to my plea. Come to my aid in my distress; have mercy, LORD, on me.

Psalm 30:2-3,10-12* (3/4) 11 You turned my wailing into dance; no longer was I sad. My sackcloth gone, you gave me clothes of joy, and I was glad.

Psalm 30:2-3,10-12* (4/4) 12 Therefore my heart will sing to you and never cease to praise; To your great name, O LORD my God, I will give thanks always.

God Calls Us to delight in Christ and to Share His Hope.
