PREPARING FOR LEAP END-OF-YEAR CONVERSATIONS April 2015

1. We’re in this for our kids. We know the only way our kids are going to grow academically is if we provide the supports our teachers need to grow professionally. 2. We believe in our educators. We believe every teacher and specialized service provider can and will be effective. 3. We’re in this together. Our teachers and SSPs deserve honest and constructive assessments of their strengths and areas for growth, evidence-based feedback and support for their professional development. 4. We’re listening. We’re using a variety of feedback tools as we work together to build our educator growth systems. Thank you to all those teachers who filled out our LEAP surveys! 2 WHY THIS WORK MATTERS

A teacher’s calculated rating is comprised of three elements: All observation data leaders enter in Schoolnet by May 8 The end-of-year professionalism ratings you provide in the LEAP Application Tool What our students tell us in the Student Perception Survey 3 IMPORTANT POINTS TO UNDERSTAND Student growth is not calculated for this year’s rating, per state law.

3 things to know about student growth results 1. While student growth results are not a part of calculated ratings, you and your teachers will see them on the end-of-year reports. 2. Student growth is reported so that teachers and school leaders can continue to learn from teacher performance in improving student learning. 3. Leaders can use student growth when they have a decision between performance categories. 4 IMPORTANT POINTS TO UNDERSTAND

Roughly 1/3 of teachers will fall into a decision band : 5 IMPORTANT POINTS TO UNDERSTAND This means there is opportunity to consider a more holistic picture in determining a final rating. Not MeetingApproaching Effective Distinguished Decision

1. Use the teacher toolkit on the LEAP website (there is a checklist to help teachers keep track of the process). 2. Talk with your school leaders – make sure it is clear who you are meeting with and when. 3. Ask your school leader for their feedback on how to prepare/what to bring. 4. You will have to enter a self-assessment (similar to last year) online BEFORE your conversation – information about this is available in the LEAP teacher toolkit. 6 PREPARING FOR YOUR CONVERSATIONS

For all teachers, including those in decision bands: We want to ensure each teacher is clear why they are receiving one rating vs. another. We want our ratings of teachers to be consistent across the district. 70% of teachers surveyed said the LEAP feedback they receive is “useful and actionable.” * *if yours is not, tell us why at leap@dpsk12.org 7 IMPORTANT POINTS TO UNDERSTAND
