Rural Brazil, near the city of Quixeramodim, Ceara state –Rural, low literacy, limited access to medical care, minimal electricity, very dry climate, farming community, high rate of sterilization, high infant mortality rate, little understanding of basic health, average monthly income $100-$200 –User - Marisa 21 year old married mother of three. Illiterate (two years of school) Concerned about her family’s health but very health illiterate. Visited periodically by a mobile healthcare worker from Programme Saude de Familia (PSF), but has trouble remembering all the instructions and information the worker gives during the visit. Because it is a rural area, Marisa has infrequent contact with her neighbors.

3. Health Assistant A mobile audio device to help Marisa with health information & tracking. Features: –Audio – Uses technology similar to an MP3 player. The device will be able to play several hours of health related audio content. –Bar code reader – Used to scan a bar coded selection of graphical material to hear related audio information. –Patient Input - Three buttons that allow the user to track health information. One button allows selection of the family member. The other two are used to answer affirmatively or negatively to audio prompts. –Health Care Input - An IR port is used by a health care worker to download new audio data to the client’s device. The projected cost of the device will be $30. –Power Source - It will be solar powered with a backup battery.
