What to do for the next quiz?

Pandemic Influenza

Timeline of human flu pandemics:

Etc

Definitions Epidemic Pandemic The appearance of more cases of a disease than would have otherwise been expected. An epidemic that occurs in many places in the world.

The Flu Virus In general we talk about 2 genes/enzymes: – H – Hemagglutinin (entry into cells) – N – Neuraminidase (making new viruses) Hence HxNy – H5N1 = avian flu – H1N1 = swine flu – etc

Where Does It Come From? Most flus are zoonoses Originate from communities with close associations with animals (poultry and swine)

Shift Vs Drift Antigenic Drift – Random mutations in the genes – H and N antigens change shape, therefore confounding your immune system – Hence drift is responsible for us needing a new seasonal flu shot each year Antigenic Shift – A more profound genetic change in H and N that allows the virus to jump from one species to another

Types of Shift Shift 1 – Eg: A bird flu and a human flu enter the same body and swap genes -> new flu Shift 2 – No genetic change, just a sudden ability to jump species Shift 3 – No genetic change, but an ability to jump from a bird/pig to intermediate host to a human

Antigenic SHIFT is responsible for the scary pandemics

Why Is Pandemic Flu Important? 1918 Flu was one of the most lethal epidemics ever known to humans It can shut down economies It can affect the most vulnerable H1N1 known for targeting the young and healthy It is airborn See: www.cdc.gov/eid/content/15/12/pdfs/09-1232.pdf

Video PBS Nova special on the 1918 Pandemic, 13 minutes: http://download.deonandan.com/video/1918 Flu.wmv Made for kids, and is about the Avian flu mostly (made before 2009), but gives the basics
