46. Definitions Epidemic Pandemic The appearance of more cases of a disease than would have otherwise been expected. An epidemic that occurs in many places in the world.

47. The Flu Virus In general we talk about 2 genes/enzymes: – H – Hemagglutinin (entry into cells) – N – Neuraminidase (making new viruses) Hence HxNy – H5N1 = avian flu – H1N1 = swine flu – etc
