Dystopia defined  An imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one.

Characteristics of a dystopian society  Propaganda is used to control the citizens.  Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted.  A figurehead or concept is worshiped by the citizens.  Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance.  Citizens fear the outside world.  Citizens live in a dehumanized state.  Citizens conform to uniform expectations.

Examples of dystopias In The Hunger Games is a perfect example of a dystopian society. The government is a dictatorship where President Snow controls the entire country of Panem. Each district’s food, freedom, income, and quality of living is controlled by the government. The government forces two children from each district to fight for their lives in the arena. They do this to remind the citizens of Panem that the are completely powerless.

Examples of dystopias Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey who is rescued from a life-and- death situation by a masked vigilante known only as “V.” Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and takes over the government- controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V’s mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself – and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plot to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

Examples of dystopias Winston Smith is a low-ranking member of the ruling Party in London, in the nation of Oceania. Everywhere Winston goes, even his own home, the Party watches him through telescreens; everywhere he looks he sees the face of the Party’s seemingly omniscient leader, a figure known only as Big Brother. The Party controls everything in Oceania, even the people’s history and language. Currently, the Party is forcing the implementation of an invented language called Newspeak, which attempts to prevent political rebellion by eliminating all words related to it. Even thinking rebellious thoughts is illegal. Such thoughtcrime is, in fact, the worst of all crimes.

The after party  With your personal quote, write at least one paragraph (6-8 sentences) on what you believe your quote is about. Support your claims with evidence from the quote.
