POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES College of Education Sta.Mesa, Manila EDUC 2093 EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY 2 ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

2 ICT AND E-LEARNING (Web based instruction)
ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

3 What is E-learning is the use of electronic media, educational technology and information and communication technologies (ICT) in education. ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

4 What is E-learning E-learning is an inclusive term that describes educational technology that electronically or technologically supports learning and teaching. Bernard Luskin, a pioneer of e-learning, advocates that the "e" should be interpreted to mean "exciting, energetic, enthusiastic, emotional, extended, excellent, and educational" in addition to "electronic." ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

5 Features of E-Learning
Learning is self-paced and gives students a chance to speed up or slow down as necessary Learning is self-directed, allowing students to choose content and tools appropriate to their differing interests, needs, and skill levels Accommodates multiple learning styles using a variety of delivery methods geared to different learners; more effective for certain learners Designed around the learner ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

6 Features of E-Learning
Geographical barriers are eliminated, opening up broader education options 24/7 accessibility makes scheduling easy and allows a greater number of people to attend classes On-demand access means learning can happen precisely when needed Travel time and associated costs (parking, fuel, vehicle maintenance) are reduced or eliminated ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

7 Features of E-Learning
Overall student costs are frequently less (tuition, residence, food, child care) Potentially lower costs for companies needing training, and for the providers Fosters greater student interaction and collaboration Fosters greater student/instructor contact ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

8 Features of E-Learning
Enhances computer and Internet skills Draws upon hundreds of years of established pedagogical principles Has the attention of every major university in the world, most with their own online degrees, certificates, and individual courses ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

9 Advantages and Disadvantages of E-Learning
ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

10 Advantages of E-Learning
Cost Time Pace Reference Learning Effectiveness Flexibility Higher Retention Greater Collaboration Global Opportunities ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

11 Pedagogical benefits of online-learning
Personalisation Interactivity Engagement ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

12 Disadvantages of online or computer-based learning
Learners with low motivation or bad study habits may fall behind. Without the routine structures of a traditional class, students may get lost or confused about course activities and deadlines. Students may feel isolated from the instructor and classmates. Instructor may not always be available when students are studying or need help. ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

13 Disadvantages of online or computer-based learning
Slow Internet connections or older computers may make accessing course materials frustrating. Managing computer files and online learning software can sometimes seem complex for students with beginner-level computer skills. Hands-on or lab work is difficult to simulate in a virtual classroom ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

14 Blended Learning -is learning that blends e-Learning with instructor-led learning. The learners do pre-work online, learning the subject and facts. Then they come together with an instructor-facilitator and do activities which may include reviewing the material seen online, role-plays, discussions, etc.\ ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

15 What are some trends in e-Learning?
ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

16 Trends Designable and actionable social networks
Video annotation and editing made simple Skype, Google and Microsoft video come to work New, thinner, cloud-based learning systems ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N

17 Limitations of e-Learning
Computer literacy and access to equipment. Some topics are not appropriate for e-Learning. Students themselves can be a limitation to e-Learning ZHYRA P. ROSIL BBTE-IT III-2N
