2 CE101: Unit 9 Seminar Tonight is our last seminar. You all have been wonderful and deserve a big round of applause. While you are waiting, please feel free to chat amongst yourselves. I am sure you have much to say tonight. I am looking forward to tonight’s discussion.

3 Achievement Levels How can educators influence their students' achievement levels? Are you enthusiastic? “If a child is to keep his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in” ~ Rachel Carson(Folarri, 2007, p. 260).

4 Teacher Expectations How do teacher expectations impact student achievement? What should you do if you make a mistake? "If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning for a decade, plant trees; if you are planning for a lifetime, educate people" Chinese Proverb

5 Key Components in Environment What are key components to include when planning for a successful learning environment? What learning theories do you consider while planning this environment?

6 Educational Philosophy What best practices should be applied in the early childhood education? What is your vision of the ideal learning environment? How do children learn, think, and feel? What role do you have as a teacher in the life of a young child? Why do you want to be a teacher?

7 There’s more…Educational Philosophy What strengths do you possess that will make you a great teacher? What skills will you need to improve as you grow as a teacher? What does it mean to you to be a teacher?

8 Day to day practice How will your beliefs affect your day-to-day practice as an educator?

9 Unit 9 Reading Assignment Read Chapter 12 "Bringing It All Together: Imagining and Becoming" in your text, Foundations and Best Practices in Early Childhood Education, for ideas on shaping your own educational philosophy.

10 Discussion Questions Refer to the guidelines from the article "Writing Your Own Educational Philosophy" and the bulleted suggestions from the text on p. 264. Using the insights gained from this course, create your own philosophy of education. As you read your classmates' responses, identify views that you share. What role will you play in the lives of the young children you serve? How will you support the families of your students? Describe your vision of an ideal early childhood learning environment.

11 Deadline on Tuesday! Please turn in all discussion questions and seminar responses by Tuesday. These assignments do not usually qualify to be turned in as incomplete assignments. Please turn in any missing projects by Tuesday. Please turn in your Unit 9 Project! If you need help with this assignment, please make an appointment with me. Thanks!

12 Incomplete Requests If you have a grade that reaches 75%, then you can request an incomplete for any missing projects. Please submit request by February 11 th. If you do not have a grade of 75%, then please submit ALL Work by Tuesday. If you do submit an incomplete request, please have your missing projects turned in by email to me by February 29 th. Do check your email daily. Thanks.

13 Unit 9 Assignments Due Please turn in all missing assignments for a grade as soon as possible. Please submit the portion of work that is complete by Tuesday. The deadline is Tuesday! Please submit your unit 9 project by Tuesday, even if it is not complete.

Both should use in-text citations and reference page Do review the rubric for the project to check off that you have all the parts that I will be looking for in determining your grade. Thanks.
