3 Presidential Campaign of 1960: Nixon and Kennedy ran against each other for the presidency. The election was so close experts pointed to the first televised debates in history as the difference in the election. Kennedy came off younger and more appealing.

4 New Frontier: Kennedy’s legislative plan. To increase aid for education and health insurance for the elderly.

5 Flexible Response: Kennedy’s Cold War policy to build up conventional weapons to create a more flexible response to Soviet aggression than Brinkmanship could.

6 Peace Corp: Starting in 1961, the Peace Corps sent volunteers to developing countries to help with projects such as digging wells and building schools.

8 Space Race (1957-1975) Event: Kennedy convinces congress to invest in defense and space exploration. Result: The United States lands the first man on the Moon.

9 Bay of Pigs (1961) Event: was an unsuccessful attempt by a CIA-trained force of Cuban exiles to invade southern Cuba to overthrow the Cuban government of Fidel Castro. Result: Many Americans criticized Kennedy for the disastrous invasion attempt.

10 The Berlin Wall Goes Up (1961) Event: was a concrete barrier built by GDR influenced by the Soviets Union that completely cut off city East & West Berlin. Result: The wall stood as a symbol of the Cold War for nearly three decades.

11 Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) Event: U.S. Navy formed a blockade around Cuba to prevent Soviet ships from bringing in more weapons. It was the closest the two countries came to nuclear war. Result: Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles from Cuba and Kennedy agreed to remove missiles from Turkey. Ultimately Kennedy looked like the hero who got the Soviets to back down.

16 Kennedy Assassination: Took place November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas in Dealey Plaza. The ten-month investigation of the Warren Commission concluded that the President was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, who was murdered by Jack Ruby before he could stand trial.
