STANDARD FORM OF A LINE

A X + B Y = C RULES: “A” must be positive “A” must be an integer (no fractions or decimals) WHAT is it USED FOR?? Easiest way to find x and y intercepts.

F INDING A Y - INTERCEPT (0,5) is an example of a y-intercept. WHICH part of the ordered pair is ZERO ? (x, y)** x is ZERO ** So… In order to find a y-intercept… 5x – 3y = 12** PLUG in ZERO for x ** 5(0) – 3y = 12 -3y = 12 Y = -4** (0, -4) ** is the y-intercept

F INDING A N X - INTERCEPT (2, 0) is an example of an x-intercept. WHICH part of the ordered pair is ZERO ? (x, y)** y is ZERO ** So… In order to find an x-intercept for 5x – 3y = 12 5x – 3y = 12** PLUG in ZERO for y ** 5x – 3(0) = 12 5x = 12 x = 12/5** (12/5, 0) ** is the x-intercept

E ASY TO G RAPH WITH Y- INTERCEPTS AND X- INTERCEPTS (0, -4)**y-intercept** (12/5, 0)**x-intercept** PLOT the two points and CONNECT the dots!!

C ONVERT TO S TANDARD F ORM : y = 12x + 10 -12x + y = 10 CAN’T be -12 **Multiply ALL by -1** 12x – y = -10 A = 12 B = -1 C = -10 Ax + By = C

C ONVERT TO S TANDARD F ORM 3y = - ½ x + 9 ½ x + 3y = 9 CAN’T have a FRACTION!! **Multiply ALL by 2** x + 6y = 18 A = 1 B = 6 C = 18 Ax + By = C
