3 Teaching The theme in a poem is the big idea from the text. It is the idea or lesson the author wants the reader to know from reading the text.In a poem, a strategy that you can use to help you identify the theme is to focus on determining the tone and mood of the poem in order to summarize the stanzas.Once a summary of each stanza is written you must use your evidence to find the overall big idea of the poem.
