Electron Cloud The electron cloud is the region outside of the nucleus where electrons are most likely to be found. Electrons travel in lanes like a runner on a track. Electrons can be anywhere in their lane. These lanes are called electron shells. Each electron shell has a different energy level. The farther away from the nucleus, the more energy the shell has.
10
Electron Shells The first electron shell can hold up to 2 electrons
11
Electron Shells The second electron shell can hold up to 8 electrons
12
Electron Shells The third electron shell can hold up to 18 electrons
13
Electron Shells The fourth electron shell can hold up to 32 electrons
14
Here is another way to look at it.. Energy LevelNumber of Electrons 1 st energy level2 electrons 2 nd energy level8 electrons 3 rd energy level18 electrons 4 th energy level32 electrons 5 th energy level50 electrons* 6 th energy level72 electrons*
15
Example Hydrogen contains 1 electron Nucleus
16
Example Carbon contains 6 electrons and looks like this Nucleus

Your assignment You are going to create the elements on the back of your paper on your electron shell board. On your board, use your Smarties as electrons and put them in the electron cloud. When you complete each one, draw a diagram of it in your notes. When you are done with all of them, you may eat your Smarties.
