He thinks George is taking Lennie’s pay. The name of the card game George plays in Chapter 2 is solitaire. There are 8 bunks in the bunkhouse. George is angry because he thinks the bed is infested with lice. Curley is a lightweight boxer. Curley wears a glove full of Vaseline. Carlson wants Candy’s dog to be put down. Curley’s Wife’s name is never revealed. The Boss and Curley wear boots to show their authority. Ringing the triangle signifies that it is time to get back to work. Slim’s bitch has nine puppies. Four are drowned.

11 A Dog’s Life Objectives: To develop awareness of how Steinbeck’s creates suspense in Chapter Three

12 A Dog’s Life Read the book up to the part where Carlson shoots Candy’s dog. This scene is full of suspense, but what makes it tense?

13 Tension What is tension? The dictionary defines tension as mental worry or emotional strain. Tension is caused by the buildup of suspense. Imagine you are on a rollercoaster. As the rollercoaster climbs slowly to the top of the first drop how do you feel? Click on the picture. In the scene where Carlson shoots Candy’s dog tension is used to engage the reader and amplify our sympathy for Candy. 13

Carlson takes the dog outside The men play cards Candy suggests that they should wait until tomorrow Carlson complains about the smell of Candy’s dog A shot is heard Candy “squirmed uncomfortably” and says that he couldn’t do it Candy rolls slowly over, faces the wall and lays silent. Slim offers Candy one of his new puppies to raise Candy looks to Slim for help but Slim offers nothing Whit comes in and shows the men the magazine Carlson tells Candy that he should shoot his old dog Carlson refuses to listen and takes out his gun Conversations are started but collapse into silence The men look quickly at old Candy. Candy hopelessly agrees Candy walks into the bunkhouse followed by his old dog Candy lays down on the bed and stares up at the ceiling George deals the cards, conversation breaks out and the game gets underway The silence is broken as a rat is heard scratching under the floorboards Carlson offers to shoot the dog himself Silence falls on the room again Candy tries to dissuade Carlson from shooting his dog but he doesn’t listen 14
