7 Pouvoir – to be able to (can)
Je peux Nous pouvons Tu peux Vous pouvez Il peut Ils peuvent Elle peut Elles peuvent On peut Note: This is an irregular verb whose spelling must be memorized. In English it is often translated as can.

8 Using pouvoir & vouloir
These 2 verbs are used when you want to say that you can or want to do something. Because of this, another verb usually follows pouvoir and vouloir. Since you can’t have 2 verbs conjugated next to each other, the first verb is conjugated and the second is in the infinitive. Ex. Je peux nager. I can swim. Je veux nager. I want to swim.

9 Negation with pouvoir & vouloir
As always, the ne….pas format is used. Place the ne before the verb and the pas after the verb. With these 2 verbs, the ne…pas goes around pouvoir and vouloir and not the infinitive verb.
