PUBLIC PROTECTION AND ETHICAL GEOSPATIAL DATA DISSEMINATION AN INITIATIVE OF GEOIDE (PROJECT IV-23) Public Protection and Ethical Geospatial Data Dissemination Social and Legal aspects Project IV-23 Marc Gervais Ph.D., project leader Rodolphe Devillers Ph.D., deputy leader

Plan  GEOIDE’s mission and funding  Some of our concerns  GEOIDE project IV-23 agenda  Project team  Goals of today’s workshop 2Brussels, May 7th

GEOIDE’s mission and funding  GEOIDE’s mission :  to consolidate and strengthen the domestic geomatics industry, while making optimum use of Canada’s Research and Development resources and to create a sustainable networking structure integrating all sectors of the Canadian geomatics community. 3Brussels, May 7th

GEOIDE’s mission and funding  GEOIDE’s funding :  Research projects : to develop new products/services, to insure technology transfer in the industry, to make or to keep Canada as an international leader in geomatic (specific topics chosen by GEOIDE);  Student funding : to train highly qualified professional (HQP) in geomatic’ field, because the students are the leaders of tomorrow.  Market development : to explore the results obtained in the course of GEOIDE projects and to assist the researchers to commercialize their results by filling the “gap” between the development of a new technology and its introduction in the market place and/or in the user communities. 4Brussels, May 7th

Some of our concerns Decisions based on wrong or poor maps … 5Brussels, May 7th

GEOIDE project IV-23 agenda 11 Research issues Data mashups (web 2.0) Selection, usability and quality of GI Guarantee of quality and certification Public portal (documentation, examples of bad GI use) Canadian survey on quality user’s needs Development of a Code of ethics Brussels, May 7th Legal aspects (civil liability, privacy and copyright) Time frame 2008-2012

GEOIDE project IV-23 agenda (Our goals) 1.Evaluate the impact of technology on privacy; 2.Evaluate the strength of copyright protection and identify new ways to protect investments; 3.Identify risky situations and clarify the share of legal obligations between producers and users; 4.Identify and test new GI quality documents (Ex. : guarantee of quality, attestation, certification); 12Brussels, May 7th

GEOIDE project IV-23 agenda (Our goals) 5.Develop a public portal related to GI quality; 6.Conduct a Canadian survey to identify the users’ needs on quality information; 7.Identify data mashup impacts and liability challenges, including user-driven feeding and updates; 8.Develop new methods to select GI and reduce inappropriate uses a priori. 13Brussels, May 7th
