2 O VERVIEW OF WP3 “A RCHITECTURAL D ESIGN ” Objective : design the system architecture for a distributed platform enabling the development and deployment of citizen observatories for community-based environmental applications Outcome : the CitIzense Platform. Partners involved: Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche IIASA Alterra Wageningen University Lund University Freiburg SAP Sinergise Bridgis Cambridge Mobile Sensing ForSense Pachube   

3 C URRENT PROGRESS ON WP3 Challenges Manage Resources complexity Different Disciplines (multi-disciplinarity) Different resource types Data, services, documents, etc. Different platforms “traditional” GIS, Geospatial information, Web 2.0, Internet of Things, etc. Manage Data complexity Different structural “nature” Structured, semi-structured, un-structured Different granularities Different semantics

4 C URRENT PROGRESS ON WP3 Challenges Build on existing systems and infrastructures supplementing but not supplanting their scope and governance rules Be Flexible future systems/ technologies Non-standard resources Interoperability with European and International initiatives (especially GEOSS, INSPIRE, Eye-on-Earth) Lower entry barriers Users Resource Providers Adopt a Brokering approach Assure system sustainability Future technologies Effectiveness Usability … etc.

8 O UTSTANDING WORK Recognition of system requirements from User Requirements (WP2, Pilots) Design the overall system architecture supporting home/mobile sensing scenarios and using a technology- agnostic (or flexible) approach Design the multidisciplinary interoperability solutions in compliance with GCI and other European Programmes (INSPIRE) Prototype development?

9 W HAT IS INNOVATIVE ABOUT WP3 Connection of innvoative mobile/home sensors in an advanced infrastructure for data sharing Linking contributions from citizen-scientists to the major international observation/monitoring infrastructures (GEOSS, INSPIRE, Eye-on-Earth, etc.) Adoption of architectural solution tested and adopted in relevant projects and initiatives advancing the brokering approach successfully developed in EuroGEOSS Support of advanced capabilities such as management of uncertainty and quality leveraging outcomes of other FP7 projects Use the existing services/technological solution developed by SMEs Use Cloud Computing to assure scalability

19 I NSTITUTION /C OMPETENCIES The National Research Council of Italy (CNR) participates in the Citizense project with the Earth and Space Science Informatics Laboratory (ESSI-Lab) of the Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research (CNR-IIA) CNR is a public organization. Its duty is to carry out, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge growth and of its applications for the scientific, technological, economic and social development. The CNR-IIA primary research activity of the institute is in the field of atmospheric pollution in urban and industrial areas as well as in rural and remote areas including the polar regions. The ESSI-Lab research focuses on the application of information science and technologies to manage, harmonize, and share Earth & Space Science resources. A major research activity concerns multi-disciplinary interoperability for System of Systems (SoS) development. These activities are carried out in the context of: Standardization organizations: ISO, CEN, OGC,… International initiatives: GEO/GEOSS, INSPIRE FP7 projects: EGIDA, EuroGEOSS, GeoWOW, UncertWeb, GeoViQua, EarthServer, FI- PPP/ENVIROFI, MEDINA, SeaDataNet2 National projects: GIIDA, Polar Data WG
