Composite Decking Blade Sponsors: Team Members: Brian Norman Craig Daniels Ted Florence Wesley Anderson Vince Mayer Advisor: Jay McCormack 1

 Primary Goal: Force Analysis Apparatus Measures force as a function of blade position Will allow different blades to be tested Use data to develop an empirical model for the cutting of composite decking Relocatable to Bullet Tools 2

 Secondary Goal: Composite Decking Blade Develop a blade that will reduce the blow out phenomena seen in composite decking by 50% 3

Projected Time Line for 2011 Semester 4

 Total Budget: $700  Cost as of this presentation: $0  Purchases to be made: Linear potentiometer Strain gage adhesive High Precision Resistors 5

 Reference Book The Science and Engineering of Cutting: The Mechanics and Processes of Separating, Scratching and Puncturing Biomaterials, Metals and Non- metals By Tony Atkins  Experimental Design  Decisions Strain Gauge Placement Linear Potentiometer Design Data Acquisition 6

GeneralSpecificMeasurement Determine force acting on blade Determine force acting on blade as position varies Be able to state the magnitude of force acting on blade for the whole cut AccurateHigh resolutionRecord at least 1 sample per mm of travel Accurate Con’tLow uncertaintyUncertainty of measurements within 10% of reading with 95% confidence FlexibleVarious materials and sizes can be tested Can test samples up to 12” wide and 1.5” thick 7

GeneralSpecificMeasurement RelocatableThe experiment setup can be moved to various locations Can be relocated to Bullet Tools in Hayden, ID RepeatableCan be performed on many samples Experiment can be performed 500 times without replacement of components Ease of useData from experiment is easy to interpret and store Data is digitally recorded on a personal computer 8

 Accuracy  What will it mean? Will the data be useable Difficult to model blade as a whole  How will it help us solve our problem? 15

Blade DesignsBlade MaterialsWidthSurface Finish Standard Magnum Shear Width I-9 (9 inches) Bullet Tools Standard Blade Finish Process Custom Width (Width of Standard Piece of decking) Machining/Fine Polish to strengthen thinner blade D2 Tool Steel 154 CM Stainless Steel Bohler N680 Stainless Steel This material has the addition of vanadium and nitrogen for increased strength 440 CC Stainless Steel High Chromium 16

 Pros No Blowout  Cons Heavy Noisy Lots of Saw Dust 17

GeneralSpecificMeasurement Improve CuttingImprove cutting performance on composite decking materials Reduce surface area of blowout phenomenon on composite decking by 50% Ease of useShould not be more difficult to operate than original model Can be operated by one person NeatDoesn’t create a mess when cutting Cutting does not produce dust AdaptableAlternative cutting methods must be adaptable to original product ResuableThe redesigned product should last at least as long as original The product should last X without needing replacement or sharpening 18

 Sharper Blade Angle θ<18°  Flip Blade around and use angled cut  Change Shape of Blade Guillotine Curved blade  Dual Blades 19
