1 Lesson 29

2 Why is it important that Jesus is both God and man in one person?

3 How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?
1 John 5:20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

4 How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus… called God and man

5 How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?
Matthew 28:20 …and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

6 How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?
John 21:17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.”

7 How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?
Luke 24:39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have. characteristics of God and man

8 How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?
Matthew 8:23-27 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

9 How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?
John 11:38-44 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

10 How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?
Matthew 4:2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

11 How do we know that Jesus is both God and man?
Mark 4:38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” actions of God and man

12 Key Point #1 We know that Jesus is both God and man because the Bible calls him both, tells us he has the characteristics of both, and tells us that he does the things that both do.

13 How did Jesus become true man and true God together in one person?
Matthew 1:20-23 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”—which means, “God with us.” conceived by the Holy Spirit born of the virgin Mary

14 How did Jesus become true man and true God together in one person?
Colossians 2:9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form… The God-Man

15 Key Point #2 Jesus became both God and man together in one person at the same time when he was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.

16 What is one reason Jesus became both God and man in one person?
Galatians 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law… under the law

17 What is one reason Jesus became both God and man in one person?
Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. lived a perfect life

18 What is one reason Jesus became both God and man in one person?
Romans 5:19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. for us

19 Key Point #3 One reason Jesus became the God-man was so he could be subject to God’s law and keep it for us.

20 What is a second reason Jesus became both God and man in one person?
Hebrews 2:14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— died

21 What is a second reason Jesus became both God and man in one person?
John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! paid the full price

22 What is a second reason Jesus became both God and man in one person?
John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! for us

23 Key Point #4 The second reason Jesus became both God and man was so that he could die and by his death pay for the sins of the world.

24 Many people who call themselves Christians deny that Jesus was born of a virgin. Go back through our lesson for today, and think about the part Jesus’ virgin birth plays in God’s plan to save us from sin. Then answer this question: “Is the doctrine of the virgin birth an important truth to believe? Why or why not?

25 Agree or Disagree? God died.

26 Luther once said that the devil would really be able to put a lot of doubt about salvation in our minds when we are close to dying if he could come to us and say, “Jesus can’t be your Savior because he is only a man!” or “Jesus can’t be your Savior because he is only God!” How would Satan be able to put a lot of doubt about our salvation in our minds if he could say either of those things to us when we are near death?

27 Lesson 29 Jesus became both God and man together by his virgin birth in order to be my Savior.
