2 E-merge presentation July 2006 Eduardo Mondlane University (Moz) 2 Project description In the project we investigated how teachers could use ICT in the classroom.The main problem is that schools that have a computer- room, do not always have teachers who are trained in using the computer in their lessons. Sometimes students are taught informatics (Word, Excel), but how to make an effective use of the computer in the classroom - during the process of learning -, is a different question. This means that teachers have to structure their lessons in a different way. They have to change their teaching strategy to a more student-centered approach. A more flexible planning is necessary, with the focus on learning instead of transferring knowledge. For schools with Internet connection, the project developed WebQuests, tasks in which students explore information on the web. For schools without Internet the lessons were copied on a Cd-Rom.

Sub-questions - How can ICT contribute to a more active and flexible way of learning? - How to adjust the teaching strategy and the lesson materials to realize this way of learning? - What are the necessary conditions to realize this change?

4 E-merge presentation July 2006 Eduardo Mondlane University (Moz) 4 Different phases of the project In two pilot schools we did the following: 1.Preparation: training of computer skills for teachers and students (Word, Internet); also extra training of design skills (how to create student-centered lessons?) for teachers; 2.Design of some internet-based lessons (WebQuests for Portuguese language and Mathematics) together with the teachers; 3.Try-out of the lessons in pilot groups of students; 4.Production of a website/cd-rom with lesson materials and a manual how to plan WebQuests;

5 E-merge presentation July 2006 Eduardo Mondlane University (Moz) 5 Conclusion Students need to have basic computer skills, that can best be trained by ‘doing’ and not in separate lessons; Teachers need even more training in computer skills, especially in the didactical use of Internet; ICT based lessons require a student centred way of teaching and a more flexible lesson planning; Students like a more cooperative and self-discovering way of working, but teachers are not familiar with this approach; There is a lack of material (especially for non-English speaking students); The school management is not always giving the necessary support; There are many technical problems (old computers, not enough equipment, no maintenance, no Internet connection etc). The use of ICT in the classroom is a complex innovation

7 E-merge presentation July 2006 Eduardo Mondlane University (Moz) 7 New roles and tasks for students and teachers From a teacher-centred approach - The teacher is the expert and the only resource of knowledge; - The student listens, repeats and memorizes; - The use of the blackboard and books; - Uniformity in planning and organization (for everybody the same) To a student centred way of working - The teacher as mediator or facilitator (supporting the learning process); - The student is active, works together, gains new insights; - The use of multimedia: books, TV, libraries, Internet, CD-roms; - Flexible planning (adjusted to various levels and needs)

8 The structure of an active learning process Phases Introduction Teacher -Links new subjects to former topics; -Raises awareness; Student -Gives examples; - Refers to his own experience; Task (Analysis and Application) -Elaboration of the topic; -Stimulation of discovery learning; -Working at a concrete result; -Makes associations; -Puts questions; -Analyzes, Compares, makes connections; Evaluation and Conclusion Generalization and Synthesis of the learning process by putting questions. Draws conclusions and gives a summary in his own words.

Using the Internet as a resource is important for now and for their future; - Teachers are willing to experiment with new strategies, but they need to become confident with the computer and with the new principles of constructivistic learning! - The school management should do all they can to support this innovation; - The ministry of Education must facilitate schools (short and long term policy): financial means, equipment, capacity building.

Choose your own topic, the target group, the level and the discipline. Use the building blocks that are given in slides 11 and 12. 1.
