Design Articles: Review. Reflect. Tamecia Jones ED 229C 21 Jan 04

Designing Handheld Technologies for Kids, Inkpen, 1999. Researched design of collaborative handheld technology for kids in Vancouver Project involved 38 10-12-year-olds Questionnaires to gauge technical literacy and use Low-Tech Prototyping Journaling to find data about the importance of portability

Key Issues. Sharability (kids don’t intuitively collaborate with handhelds) Functionality Mobility Size (children= no briefcases, small pockets) Usability Size (don’t sacrifice screen/keyboard space) Input/output (voice, mouse, access to printing affects use) Screen layout Icons Terminology

Contrasting Literature on Horizon… Child-centered design is not as clearcut as current methodology implies. Child-centered design presents challenges at normal stages of design of storyboarding and prototyping.

Implications. Building relationship is important Children may or may not be carefree and risky with ideas The age of the children involved in design process seems to be important as it relates to cognitive ability Storyboarding and prototyping might not be as authentic if they have to be taught Gender differences may become prevalent in the process and skew data towards more gender-specific design Time required for adequate participation may not be feasible in the project timeline
