High-Throughput Microscopy and Computational/Theoretical Challenges in the Analysis of Neural Circuit Structure Society for Neuroscience 2008 Minisymposium Tuesday, November 18, 2008 Room 207B

“The goal of neural science is to understand the mind, how we perceive, move, think and remember.” Eric Kandel, James Schwartz, Thomas Jessell, Principles of Neural Science, 4th Ed.

Santiago Ramón y Cajal Considered a founder of Neuroscience Used Golgi staining to study the structure of the central nervous system Sotelo, C. Nature Reviews Neuroscience 4, 7-77, 2003

We know a great deal about how neurons communicate at the level of the individual cell and synapse http://morbidanatomy.blogspot.com/2008/0/santiago -ramn-y-cajal-1852-934.html ** **http://www.learner.org/courses/biology/ units/neuro/images.html

Cholinergic synaptic vesicle Kandel et al., Principles of Neural Science, 4th Ed.

We know much less about what happens at the network level Sotelo, C. Nature Reviews Neuroscience 4, 7-77, 2003 http://www.learner.org/courses/biology/ http://www.learner.org/courses/biology/ units/neuro/images.html

This minisymposium will survey the latest advances in high-throughput microscopy methods with the goal of advancing our understanding of brain networks. Imaging and analysis of neuronal microcircuits on the scale of whole small animal brains will be presented. Pertinent computational issues will be discussed.
