1 CSL Workshop, October 13-14, 2005 ESDI Workshop on Conceptual Schema Language and Tools - Aim, Scope, and Issues to be Addressed Anders Friis-Christensen, JRC

2 CSL Workshop, October 13-14, 2005 Outline Background issues Aims and scope Description of EuroRoadS From model to data transformation

3 CSL Workshop, October 13-14, 2005 Aim To gather as much knowledge as possible from the invited experts (JRC is in a learning process) –We hope to have a more clear understanding of what can actually be achieved with current software and methodologies –What can we expect of future technologies? Will they change the way that data harmonization and data specification can be addressed and in which way?

4 CSL Workshop, October 13-14, 2005 Issues - Data and Model Transformation –We do not yet know how pan European data will be administered/published Depends on user requirements This may, however, effect on how common models and architecture are developed –One thing is certain: INSPIRE will not put restrictions on how member states will organize their data locally –So we need methodologies that can transform data from one given model into another Automatically (preferably no manual intervention) Easy set-up Minimum cost Support from vendors/technologies Support a SOA

5 CSL Workshop, October 13-14, 2005 Approaches to Modeling

6 CSL Workshop, October 13-14, 2005 Architecture? Various member state publish data according to a common model via services:

7 CSL Workshop, October 13-14, 2005 Architecture? A common repository of data according to a common model:

8 CSL Workshop, October 13-14, 2005 Architecture?

9 Questions to be Addressed Models and model languages: –Do existing conceptual modeling languages satisfy our requirements for making geographic data models? –In order to harmonize: Do we need common conceptual models? A meta model? If, then to which level of detail? Models should allow extensions based on MS requirements –Do we need a common conceptual schema language in Europe, e.g., by extensions to UML? –Are extensions of UML feasible? In terms of tools support etc.? –How do we enable model evolution (schema versioning)? –Is the development of a generic model and then domain models the way forward? –How to enable quality control of data models? –Representing constraints in models (e.g. topological): Enable quality control and validation of data Enable the customer to check, that he gets what he ordered? –How to relate to ontology (formal semantics) standards such as W3C's OWL (RDF) or OMG's ODM?

10 CSL Workshop, October 13-14, 2005 Questions to be Addressed Data and models exchange: –Is it possible to identify a common approach to data models interchange (XMI as a solution)? –Can data interoperability be sufficiently achieved through schema mapping? XSLT an appropriate technology –How to generate code: DBMS SQL/DDL (and triggers/functions supporting model/constraints) XML (GML) schema (for on-line/off-line data exchange) –How to exchange cartographic expression rules? –Current DBMS technologies that can help in remodeling/exchange Data warehousing Materialized views Tools: –What tools exist? What are their limitations? –Where are these tools located in the Spatial Data Infrastructure? –Can they be integrated in a service architecture?
