3 Benefits of promoting through the web The Global Search Market attracted more than 100 Billion searches a month at the end of 2009. Google had the highest market share with 80 billion searches a month followed by Yahoo! 9.4 billion searches. (Comscore, Dec 2009). Social media is also increasing number of searches and accessibility to service providers. At the end 2009 Twitter received 19 Billion searches. Being visible online is vital to attract new service users, volunteers, fundraise and promote your organisation.

4 Benefits continued…… The UK has the highest number of searches for the term ‘voluntary sector,’ with the North of England and Scotland ranking the highest. (google.com/trends) The UK also has the highest number of searches for the term ‘volunteering’ followed by Australia and Ireland. (google.com/trends)

5 Where to begin? - Have a Strategy! Create WebPages to promote your organisation What should be include: About You – a brief overview to accustom the viewer with who you are. Your services – what you offer, and why what you do is important and needed How to interact with the organisation – become a member, fundraise, etc. A call to action. Meet the Staff – Humanises the organisation. Contact Details –this information needs easily accessible Other possible content: Calender of events, testimonials (good marketing tactic), useful links, etc.

6 A guide to building your WebPages How to create your main Homepage 1.Sign in to the OCVA main website. 2.Select ‘Create Content’ on the bottom right menu. 3.Select Group on the list 4.Fill in the necessary details, Title, Description and a brief Mission Statement. 5.Select the type of visibility you want for your WebPages using the Membership request options. 6.Choose your URL path. (Suggested your organisation name). 7.Preview to see how this will look. 8. Save

7 A guide to building your WebPages (2) How to build additional pages 1.Select ‘Create Content’ in your bottom right menu 2.Select ‘Group Page’ 3.Insert Title and the body text. 4.Weight (Insert weight number: This will decide where about in the menu this page will appear, the lower the number the higher up the page will appear in the content menu) 5.Select which audience should see this page. (your group) 6.Select URL path (Suggested: write orgs name abbreviated + title of page i.e. ocvahomepage). 7.Preview 8.Save

8 Additional add-ons How to add a picture in your body text 1.Place your cursor in the place you would like your image to appear. 2.Click the Insert/Edit icon at the top right corner of the body text box. 3.Click Browse Server: Upload your image by clicking the top left Upload Button. 4.Once this has been uploaded: double click on the image, this will take you back to the previous window. 5.Insert Alternative Text - a legal requirement 6.Change width and height if needed. 7.OK

How to place a downloadable document in your body text 1.Select File attachments towards the end of the page 2.Browse and select your file, click attach. 3.Once attached Unclick the icon ‘List’ - then highlight the uploaded document’s name from /sites…………………….doc 4.Right click and copy this information. 5.Finally highlight the part of the text in the main body window which you would like to link. 6.With this highlighted click the Insert/Edit Link icon. 7.Paste the documents details in the URL box and press OK. 8.You will now see that your selected text is linked to this document.

10 How to create an Event 1.Select Create Content from your bottom right hand side menu. 2.Insert Title, select Event Class i.e. Workshop, Training, etc. 3.Insert more information in your body text. Maybe add a link to a brochure or a downloadable booking form. 4.Select your Audience – Your Group 5.Add the Event Start Date &Time and End Date & Time 6.Add Venue 7.Preview 8.Save (You can also promote an Event through a page, this is just an alternative and will stand out from the standard menu option).

11 We have the WebPages now what? Include the WebPages details on all your promotional materials, leaflets, posters, business cards SEO tactics – make a list of key words that you repeat throughout you pages Use social media – Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn. Always have links to your WebPages Blogging – Talk about current issues, have a voice, make comments on other people’s blogs and always have a link to your website and social media pages.
