2 The End of Slavery Some slaves, especially older ones, were fearful about freedom Emancipation was traumatic for former masters The most urgent need for free people was finding family members who had been sold away from them

3 Family Reunions People placed newspapers adds trying to find lost family members Ben & Betty Dodson were a married couple reunited after 20 years Some husbands & wives learned their spouses had remarried

4 Special Field Order #15 Former slaves wanted land; they believed their future as a free people was tied to the possession of land Special Field Order #15 was a military directive that set aside a strip of land along the Atlantic coast for freedmen It was supposed to give each family 40 acres and the use of army mules ( “40 acres and mule”)
