2 doc.: IEEE 802.15-07/0913r0 Submission November 2007 Huai-Rong Shao et al., SamsungSlide 2 Motivation Now a user usually carries multiple CE devices Wireless body area network (WBAN) provides a convenient way to connect these CE devices Operation simplicity is one of the key user requirements to handle multiple CE devices –Easy and automatic deployment –Zero or minimal configuration by users –One button touch for most tasks involving multiple devices Collaborative WBAN (CWBAN) can help users easily use multiple CE devices. –Provide seamless connectivity and collaborative interaction among devices –A CWBAN looks like one virtual “device” for a user

5 doc.: IEEE 802.15-07/0913r0 Submission November 2007 Huai-Rong Shao et al., SamsungSlide 5 CWBAN Usage Example 3: Wearable Computer Technical issues in Wearable Computer –A lot of wires to connect different components –Hardware/software support to coordinate the wearable components distributed over the user’s body –Compact, low power computer systems capable of dealing with the high signal processing and graphics load encountered in wearable computing CWBAN can –Provide seamless connectivity of the wearable components distributed over the user’s body and work collaboratively –Provide necessary platform support for distributed computer system control/management WBAN can help removing these cables CWBAN allows components to work collaboratively.

6 doc.: IEEE 802.15-07/0913r0 Submission November 2007 Huai-Rong Shao et al., SamsungSlide 6 User Requirements for CWBAN Simple user operation –Easy and automatic deployment –Zero or minimal configuration by users –One button touch for most tasks involving multiple devices Very low RF emission so that it is safe to human body Self-organizing, Self-healing, Robust & Adaptive network management –Network always survive except user turns it off –Adaptive to the changing environment due to portable devices and human being’s activities Quality of Service –Bandwidth, Delay, Jitter, etc. for AV and gaming Scalable data rates to support a broad range of applications –from a few Kbps to at least 100 Mbps Security –Private and confidential information shall be highly protected –Virus and network attack prevention –Fast authentication and content protection Power saving –BAN should help minimize overall power consumption Personalization in use of CE devices –User can use a CE device and network in his preferred way

7 doc.: IEEE 802.15-07/0913r0 Submission November 2007 Huai-Rong Shao et al., SamsungSlide 7 Some technical challenges for CWBAN New wireless communication protocols to support “virtual link” ( Similar with “data bus” to connect all components within one PC) –Synchronization mechanism –How to maintain the “virtual link” with power saving support –P2P/Mesh support New communication and computing resource abstraction, discovery, allocation, scheduling and security mechanisms Scalability support at the aspects of data rate, power consumption, and etc.

8 doc.: IEEE 802.15-07/0913r0 Submission November 2007 Huai-Rong Shao et al., SamsungSlide 8 Summary CE applications are important for Wireless BAN –Current data rate requirement of 10Mbps may not be sufficient for some CE applications (some AV applications may require more than 100Mbps) –QoS support is very important Collaborative Wireless BAN (CWBAN) can ease users’ lives and bring new BAN applications –Distributed A/V Recording and Storage –High-definition BAN Theater System –Wearable Computer –Others Many technical issues need to be solved to support these promising BAN applications
