History Graph height of tree vs. circumference Geometry of trees Measure and compare trees Size/Population Graph tree population – 1900, 1925, 1930. Graph height of trees at Hashawha. Punnet Square Calculations Calculate tree heights vs. species at Northwest Bar Graph of water, sunlight, and temperature Power Team Application of Wood Outdoor School Weather Factors Tree Growth using ARC Ecological Balance 10 Hypo-virulence Applications Negative compatibility of fungi Restoration efforts Research process integrated with AP Stats Ecology Science Research Relationship between canker and analysis Other data sets provided by PSU Gel Electrophoresis Tree Growth Genetics Kit Classification –Dichotomous Key 7 8 6 __ Tech ___ Math Science AP Stats Recruiting CD Excel Spreadsheets Data bases for environmental factors - Excel Spreadsheets Image J Program for measuring tree rings Photo Story Genetic Engineering Solution to Blight ARC Program Weather analysis of tree growth 11/12 GIS, GPS/ Soil Analysis/ LabQuests Web 2.0 Applications for Data Sets LabQuests Working with research scientist data sets. 3 Grade 6 VSC Indicators –Math 2.A.2.d Use radius, diameter, and circumference 2.A.1.c Identify and describe the parts of a circle 2.D.1.b Identify mathematical concepts in relationship to other disciplines –Science 6.2.3 Conclude that populations grow or decline due to a variety of factors 6.3.4 Evaluate the interrelationship between humans and biological resources 6.4.1 Identify an environmental issue and formulate related research questions

Historical Context The American Chestnut Story –Video clip from the American Chestnut Foundation, November 2008

How Large are American Chestnut Trees? Northwest Middle orchard. Measure the height of an American Chestnut tree each month Find the mean/average tree growth and predict future growth. Students will represent tree heights graphically using Excel

End of Year Analysis Scatter Plot made with the data – find the line of best fit.

End of Year Analysis Make predictions Compare the two – Does the line graph support the prediction of the scatter plot and the line of best fit? Equation of the line: y = mx + b where x represents month and y represents height

Other Applications Box and whisker plots Circle graphs Measure circumference and calculate diameter of an American Chestnut tree Live data – meaningful – posted on the Math Intranet site for all schools to use

The Chestnut Blight Capillary Action is interrupted by the canker growth.

Examples of Cankers chestnut tree cankers The capillary action of the tree is stopped by cankers.
