8 Environmental Separations Branch
Technologies Indoor Air Asthma & Exposure Monitoring Biogenic Organics in Outdoor Air Product Emissions Research IQ-Gel for Air Cleaning Separations Sciences New Ventilation Systems Last Bullet: CSIRO in Australia developed the indoor air quality guidelines for the Sydney Olympics. November 2002

9 Environmental Separations Branch
Projects IQ-Gel for indoor air cleaning & chem/biowarfare protection Real-time exposure & lung function monitor for asthma & CF patients Field test methods measuring gas phase filtration lifetimes Newer ventilation technologies for improved IAQ in schools Air cleaning building ventilation systems Fungal MVOCs Product emissions Biogenic and elemental PM10 & PM2.5 determination Last Bullet: CSIRO in Australia developed the indoor air quality guidelines for the Sydney Olympics. November 2002

10 Environmental Separations Branch
Unique Capabilities Test Rig Environmental Chamber Facility (17 chambers ranging from 28.3 m3 – 135 mL) Mass Spectrometric Facility (7 systems – GC/MS, LC/MS, MS/MS, ICP/MS, ion trap/MS) Real-time, telemonitoring exposure & lung function monitoring system Last Bullet: CSIRO in Australia developed the indoor air quality guidelines for the Sydney Olympics. November 2002

11 52.2 Test Rig Required by ASHRAE method 52.2 to test particulate air filters GTRI’s system adapted to also test gaseous phase air filters – currently the only system capable of testing filters for both particles and gases Available for particle and gaseous filtration research Being used to test the GTRI-patented IQ-Gel research for indoor air cleaning and chem/biowarfare protection ASHRAE method 52.2 Test Rig November 2002

12 Proposed GT Indoor Air Quality Measurements
Monitor changes in asthma exacerbations and indoor air exposures with the GTRI asthma monitoring system Monitor exposures of selected volunteers with passive VOC monitors Match hospital admissions changes with indoor and outdoor AQ measurements First bullet additional comments: There will be a selected group of pediatric patients and the AIRS will be placed in the volunteers’ bedrooms. November 2002

13 Proposed GT Indoor Air Quality Measurements
Monitor indoor air quality in selected schools, office buildings, and/or households Investigate occupant changes in health symptoms via questionnaire Monitor IAQ in Olympic facilities following procedures set at the Sydney Olympics, 2000 Last Bullet: CSIRO in Australia developed the indoor air quality guidelines for the Sydney Olympics. November 2002
