GT-CERT Overview

CERT Purpose The Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

GT-CERT History Georgia Tech began a Campus Emergency Response Team over six years ago. Initially the training was supported by Atlanta Fire Rescue, but several years ago Georgia Tech Police Department’s (GTPD) Office of Emergency Preparedness took over the training and has maintained the program. Over 250 people have completed the training, including an estimated 200 that are still affiliated with Georgia Tech.

Overall Focus Increase community disaster readiness Perform light search & rescue operations Assess damage after a disaster Perform triage and provide medical services to the injured Extinguish small fires and teach fire safety Organize procurement of disaster supplies

Training Fall Semester To better accommodate students and other campus community members, now offer two 90 minute classes each week beginning in September. Each class will be identical to better accommodate schedules. This training will occur during the Fall Semester. This will also kick off National Emergency Preparedness Month.

Training Spring Semester In February 2014 we began a formal refresher training for people that have already completed the regular CERT training. It’s also important to offer refresher training each year, which will include refresher training in the morning, lunch and specialized training in the afternoon.

Training Early Summer We offer the class the week between the spring and first summer session over a two-day/back-to-back time period.

Specialized Teams Although it’s important to have a large number of CERT members available for general awareness and response in the event of a major disaster, we have begun to develop specialized teams. Current Teams Fire Corps: A group of 10-12 will work with GT Fire Marshall and be trained on special event evacuation procedures, fire safety awareness and fire extinguisher requirements. Up to six members of the Fire Corps will work football games. Another major function will be teaching fire safety on campus. Moulage Team: This small team will continue to learn the art of moulage to add realism to training and exercises.

Specialized Teams Future Teams Role-players/Actors. This team will support training and exercises (CERT drills, active shooter, response drills, etc.). Evacuation Support Team: Small group that would assist in the event of a campus wide evacuation at checkpoints and assembly areas. Campus Animal Response Team (CART): Team to facilitate a rapid, coordinated, and effective response to any emergency effecting animals on campus.
