1 Is a Calculation of the Rate at Which Work Is Done. The Formula Is ( Torque X RPM ) / 5252 Different Rating Standards Give Different Horsepower Results. Another Term for Horsepower Is Watts. Watts Rating on Horsepower Chart Is Not Used to Match Generator Output. Torque Value and RPM Are Needed to Calculate Horsepower. 2 Is the Measured Output of Twisting Force That the Engine Can Provide at a Given RPM. An Engine Is a Torque Producing Device. Maximum Torque Can Only Be Achieved at Wide Open Throttle. Volumetric Efficiency Is the Limiting Factor in an Engine. Any Increases in RPM After Volumetric Efficiency, Will Result in Loss of Torque. Excess Torque Capability Is Translated Into Speed. 14 Combustion Pressure Rotation Throw Combustion Pressure Is Force Rotation Is Twist Throw is Perpendicular Distance The Formula for Torque is; Force X Distance = Torque If Torque Is to Remain the Same and We; Increase the “Throw” of the Crankshaft, The Speed of Rotation Will Go Down. Decreased the “Throw”, the Speed of Rotation Will Go Up. TORQUE © 2000 Briggs & Stratton Customer Education Department 000630

18 With the throttle plate at “wide open”, the maximum amount of torque is achieved. EXCESS TORQUE © 2000 Briggs & Stratton Customer Education Department 000630

19 With the throttle plate at less than “wide open”, the maximum amount of torque has not been achieved. If we open the throttle any more, torque does not increase. The extra torque will be translated to an increase in speed. EXCESS TORQUE © 2000 Briggs & Stratton Customer Education Department 000630
