* A trait that has been acquired over time to help an organism better survive in its environment.

* Light – very little light so some organisms create light through a reaction that occurs in their body; usually blue or green * Temperature – temps can vary, but generally stay between 2-4 degrees

* Fish and other aquatic organisms take in oxygen through their gills and skin * Marine mammals needs to come up to the surface for air * They have blow holes ad nostrils, they don’t have to breathe again for another hour * They exchange 90% of their lung capacity with every breath * Store oxygen in their blood and muscles

* Deep sea creatures don’t have excess cavities that would collapse under pressure; example would be a swim bladder * Collapsible lungs allow animals to dive very deep without losing oxygen * Leatherback sea turtle can dive 3000 feet, it shell and collapsible lungs keep it protected * Oxygen is stored in muscles

Beluga Whale Clown Fish Crab Seahorse

* They can move in and around things rather than fast * They can save oxygen * Heart rate slows when they dive * Blood goes to important organs * Always alert, only one side of their brain rests

* Hard shell for protections * Rough waves * Predators * Keeps body moist

* Bright colors are alarming * The sea anemone sting is poisonous and deadly, but not to the clown fish

* Their shape makes them stealthy in the water, they are not the best swimmers
