Chemical Reactions

What IS a chemical reaction? A Chemical reaction is defined a process in which one or more substances are changed into others. There are five MAIN types of Chemical reactions which include: synthesis, Single- replacement, Decomposition, Double- replacement, and exothermic Reaction.

How do you know when a reaction had occurred? There are several clues to when a chemical reaction has taken place. 1. Gas Formation 2. Solid Formation 3. Color Change 4. Energy Change One or ALL of these may occur in a chemical reaction.

Significant People??? WWhhaattt Yes its true. They were actually SEVERAL important people involved in discovering what goes on during a chemical reaction. ONE of those people went by the name of Edward Teller.

. Teller was born on Jan. 15 1908, and Died September 9, 2003. He was know as “the father of the hydrogen bomb.” He was a co-founder of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and was both its director and associate director for many years

How do we use Chemical reactions in everyday life? There are MANY ways chemical reactions are used EVERY day! You may not realize it, but if you have ever: ~ Baked a cake ~Changed the batteries ~ saw rust on a bike or mixed vinegar and baking soda together, then you have witnessed a chemical reaction. Some are very simple, but others may be EXTREAMLY complex.

Bombs? You may not know this, but a HUGE part of bombs working, is a…yes that’s right you guessed it! A chemical reaction! But how?, you may ask: Basically, when a bomb goes off, it sets off a series of chain reactions, therefore causing that huge exploding, destruction-causing effect we all know and love so much.

Math time! A big part of chemical reactions, is balancing equations. If the equation is not balanced, then it doesn’t follow the law of conservation of mass. If it doesn’t follow the law of conservation of mass, then you’ve got some SERIOUS problems. But not to worry, because balancing equations is VERY easy!

Balancing Equations its easy as 1,2 3! 1 st : Figure out weather or not the equation has equal amounts of the elements on each side. 2 nd : If it does NOT have the same number of an element on each side, then decide what you have to do in order to balance it. Ex. 3HO-------2HO As you can see, you have one more hydrogen atom on the left side than the right. In this case you would add one more hydrogen atom to the right side, this makes it so that there is 3 hydrogen atoms, and 1 oxygen atom.

In conclusion… You may not know it, but everywhere you look a chemical reaction is taking place. Weather it be by cooking, a candle burning, a bike rusting, or even a bomb going off. Its Everywhere! So next time your bike rusts from the rain, you’ll know why!
